        Hello,

I have two Netherland dwarf house rabbits who live in my front room – we also have a dog and a tortoise in the house. I just wondered whether they should have regular flea and worm treatment? I have a package at my vets which includes this however the breeder I bought them from said they do not need it and they she applies treatment when they board with her and I go on holiday? Just wondering whether I should continue the package with my vets or cancel?

        Thank you

        Lisa

What treatments were you given? I’ve never heard of this before, so I err on the side of caution…. I don’t think anyone does regular flea treatments for their rabbits unless they have a pet that has fleas or has a history of frequently getting fleas. There are flea and worm treatments that are lethal for rabbits, so if the vet included any of these types in the provided package, I’d definitely look into a new rabbit vet. Can you identify what you were given?

I’m of the opinion that indoor rabbits shouldn’t be given preventative flea or worm treatments. If there is an issue both are easy enough to treat for. Worming especially can be hard on their gut flora so I feel it’s just best not to do unless necessary. Assuming your dog goes out for walks etc and you give him preventative treatments for fleas then I really don’t see a need to be treating bunny unless necessary.

I used to do both but I stopped. I think if you regularly prevent-treat for worms with Panacur, if a rabbit actually needs treatment then the panacur might not be effective enough anymore.
