        Hey guys.

Earlier this morning my two female rabbits got in a tussle (my fault, I was an idiot and didn’t properly latch Ginny’s cage) and when Hermione went to attack Ginny, her mate George, took a piece out of Hermione’s ear. No one’s seriously hurt, I made sure, but Hermione’s ear is pretty bad. She’s been hurt a couple times before cause she’s not very careful and tends to end up in bad situations but I’m not so sure about this one, it’s torn pretty badly. I don’t think a trip to the vet is necessary, yes I know I need to get them spayed we’re in the middle of a move and we just don’t have the time and money right now. I do intend to take them both in soon though.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with natural, essential oils and if they know which ones I can put on her ear? My mother suggests Jojoba Oil but I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t hurt her first. Any other suggestions? I can’t really wrap it up, she’ll just tear off anything I put on her ear and I don’t want to put on something that could hurt her if she tries licking it off.

Any and all suggestions and comments very appreciated! Thanks.

(Sorry for the terrible camera quality, I’ll post better pictures later).

It doesn’t really show well in the picture and I didn’t want to hurt her, but it’s torn in a kind of V. I didn’t want to pull on it for the picture and she kept flinching.

I really think you need more than essential oils for a torn ear (also I’m pretty sure there was a thread recently about essential oils being poisonous to bunnies? can’t remember details, but candles and burning oils was certainly agreed on as dangerous). There are big veins in the ear, and it could easily get infected. Have you cleaned it at all? Personally, I would take her to the vet.

Yes, I made sure to clean it well. Like I said, she’s cut her ears before but never quite this badly. It’s not bleeding anymore, and I didn’t mean burning oils or candles. There are some essential oils that you can put directly onto a wound to heal it faster and more naturally. I’m sure that some are good for rabbits, I’m just not sure what and I wanted to know what some other people use.
The picture is pretty zoomed up, so it’s not as big as it looks. It took me a minute to find it, and i wouldn’t have at all if I hadn’t gotten blood on my hand. It’s not visibly bothering her (she’s not cleaning it, scratching it, pawing it) and I’ll watch very closely for any signs of infection. If there are any I’ll rush her to the nearest vet, but the nearest one that is familiar with rabbits is an hours drive away.
Thanks for the suggestion, all other comments are still very welcome!

Haha sorry, I wasn’t implying you would be burning the oils, I just meant that if they’re poisonous when burned, I’m not sure about safety to rub on. Although, I know lavender is safe to eat, but not safe to burn, so I’m not sure what causes what issue. Maybe it is the fumes from burning, rather than the scent itself.

Hope she’s still doing well today

                  Hi Serenity,

Recently I discovered a v-shape notch taken out of my rabbit Sam’s ear. It wasn’t bleeding when I first saw it, but it was looking pink and sore. I kept it clean with warm water & kept an eye on it for signs of infection but luckily he healed up fine without a vet visit!

I’d advise you to keep a very close eye, dab with warm water and cotton/gauze (the kind that doesn’t leave fibres behind, you don’t want those getting stuck there and possibly getting infected!). You could also use betadine or iodine based formula to clean the wound if you think it needs it.

Finally, if you have any A&D Original Ointment or plain diaper rash ointment (make sure it’s zinc & fragrance free) you could apply a little to the area as a topical treatment. I’m not sure on essential oils as they could irritate her delicate sin, especially undiluted. I’ve read before that even Aloe Vera is not safe for rabbits.

Good luck and fingers crossed she won’t need a vet visit!

A lot of essential oils are toxic and poisonous to rabbits. For example, tea tree oil. Great to heal infections on wounds, and helps wounds heal faster, but should never ever be put on or near a rabbit because its toxic and poisonous to them (it can even be life threatening). I wouldnt trust essential oils unless instructed by a certified vet.

Plain neosprin on the wound would help much more and is completely safe for rabbits.

Thanks for all the help guys! Heaven, I’ve been checking on her ear multiple times a day and it’s healing faster than I expected. No more bleeding, all sealed up. It doesn’t even bother her when I touch her ear, though she doesn’t particularly like me getting too close to the tear. I usually let her run around outside during the day cause she obeys really well and knows where she can go and where she can’t (fenced in backyard, bird netting up in case of hawks/predators, neighbors have a handle on their dogs, I covered my bases) but for now she’s chillin’ inside to lower risk of infection. I didn’t want to use Aloe Vera cause I’d heard it was bad but thanks for letting me know.
Mikey, I’ve made sure not to put anything on her or let my mom cause I’m not 100% sure what’s toxic and what’s not, I’m being really careful, no need to worry. I know a couple people who worked as vets and/or have been working with rabbits their whole lives and I’ve asked around but none of them know either so I’m ditching oils for now and letting nature take its course to heal her up. Neosporin I was a little worried about (what if she licks it off and ingests it?) but thanks for the suggestion. I’ll see how well that works.
                      Thanks again everyone!

Plain neosporin (without the pain killer) is fine if buns ingest some of it Ive used it on my buns when accidental scuffles cause rough or broken skin. Many also use it for sore hocks when theyre waiting on vet care. Of course, if you choose the leave the wound alone instead and just keep an eye on it, thats fine too!
