I have been using phone books (sans glossy pages) as toys for my buns for many years as they are fun to shred and the print is not toxic for them- are there any other safe toys like this for shredding that buns can use? I find that in today’s day and age the printed phone book is a limited resource?

Pre-shredded but they might have fun shredding it some more.

I didn’t know a phone book was safe for them !!?? I thought the ink would be poisonous to them?
(Sorry, not saying it is, just saying I didn’t think it would have been)

glossy (shiny) ink is bad for rabbits but they can tolerate small amounts of matte (not shiny) ink. It’s important to make sure they aren’t eating the paper.

                Thanks Harley&Thumper!
My luck they would – but that just sounds so fun haha

And to the original poster – I just saw another post a few down from yours were someone linked to a tutorial to make matt’s out of newspaper or cardboard boxes… I know my bunny loved to dig at the grass ones I bought, so this may be an idea…..

Agree about the sad lack of phone books, Bunston used to love shredding them.

My two really like to “dig” and “reshape” card board cat scratchers. I don’t know if it’s quite the same instinct as shredding, but it keeps them from digging the carpet.

And yes the non-glossy parts of both newsprint and phone books are safe. Waaaaay back in the day, newsprint was printed with toxic inks containing heavy metals, but now there are strict regulations (at least in the US) and the inks are non-toxic.

Thanks- this little one I have really likes the resistance- this would make a great substitution for dirt in a dig box though!

Thanks! I will have to give it a try!
