        Just curious

Sam is getting on for 5 months & fairly well litter trained (always the occasional soaked territorial poops) and a bit of a digger. I’m considering not neutering him since I don’t have the intention to bond for the foreseeable future and he’s generally very well behaved… The vet thinks I’m in for a surprise come Spring though!

Garf is exactly the same Heaven, our vet told us to not worry about it and do it whenever we’re ready/he’s showing signs of needing it done

Cookie Dough who was not hormonal at all until he was 1 year old. One day he went absolutely nuts although he did calm down after a few months. We didn’t have much of a problem with him but he got neutered at 4 so we could bond him. Dasher got hormonal at around 5 months and she too calmed down and is pretty well litter trained but I am getting her spayed soon due to health reasons. Your little one might end up surprising you later but you can decide once he gets a little older.

Bombur was hormonal when we brought him home at 7.5 weeks, and Asriel was hormonal around 10-11 weeks. My vet wouldn’t neuter until 4 months though.

Ophelia was spayed at 6 months. The vets in my area would do neuters at 4 months, but for spays they recommend waiting until 6 months so the girl has time to grow a little bit more.

Even though you don’t plan to bond him in the near future, I would still go ahead and get it done, personally. I say this because:

                  1) you’ll have to go through the process anyway if you do decide to bond

                  2) (forbid this ever happen) but if any health issues develop down the road, he may not be a candidate for neutering

                  3) I think domestic rabbits can have a more fulfilling life when we remove those hormonal urges. That’s not to say that an unneutered rabbit won’t live a happy and fulfilling life, that is totally possible!

Maybe I’m wrong, just a thought!

Thanks BunNoob… yeah, I’m really not sure!

Any other advocates for neutering? I’m not dead against it, just don’t see a huge need to do it at the moment. Really keen to hear opinions though.

I think it often really depends on the bunny. Both of my boys really needed it. Bombur stopped mounting everything after his neuter. Asriel became a lot less high strung and mellowed out a lot after his neuter. Both boys had lost litter habits before the neuter, and regained them after (Bombur’s struggling right now though). I think if he’s not exhibiting any overt hormonal behaviors, it might not be totally necessary.

Of course he went through puberty, but Breintje never showed any annoying hormonal behaviour when he still lived with Bas. Only when Breintje moved into my apartment at age 2 he started to spray, circle me and hump everything in sight. Could it be a dominant male vs. member of opposite sex thing?
Breintje got neutered soon after, because he was making a massive mess of everything.

Alfie wasn’t super hormonal but I got him neutered at 6 months. He would spray a bit and leave tons of territorial poops, so I decided to get it done earlier rather than later because I didn’t want lots of hormonal behaviors to start occurring.

                            8mo for testes to drop.
9mo for spraying me to occur.
                            9mo + 3 days for neuter.

                            A very compact timeline haha.

Hahaha, there’s a very precise point in time indeed, and prompt action too ^_^
