Hi, I am new to this forum and am in need of guidance– one of my bunnies, Jolene, is currently nesting (she experiences false pregnancies on a semi-regular occasion) and as such is pulling out hair, but today for the first time she pulled out so much hair that her skin became visible on her dulap, on her belly around a nipple, and on her armpits. Is this still a normal part of nesting behavior? Or should I take her to the vet? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

          Hi there,

Since discussion of intentional breeding isn’t allow on this forum, I don’t know that many members here will have a good answer for you just because they may not have experienced this. Is there a reason why she experiences so many false pregnancies?

This forum has a section on breeding: http://www.rabbitsonline.net/

You might also post there, but I would be inclined to call your vet and see what they think. Is she doing OK otherwise? Eating well and pooping etc?

I know they can pull out quite a lot of fur when nesting, but that does sound like a lot. I think the larger issue is why she is having these false pregnancies in the first place. (And you are certain it is a false pregnancy and not a real one??)

They can certainly make bald spots when pulling fur for nesting. It won’t cause any harm. Her hormones make the fur loosen so it’s easier to pull out.

Are you planning to have her spayed? That would eliminate all of the frustration she is probably experiencing from these false pregnancies. Plus it has a lot of other benefits to go along with it (eliminates reproductive cancer risk, improves behavior, makes it easier to litter train, etc.).

My female pulled out, what I felt, was half her fur when she was nesting.

(Accidental pregnancy, jail break 1 week before the already made neutering appt for our male.)

When I was researching nesting (and hoping for false pregnancy) many of the sites said this was common. Even for false pregnancy.
Now that the kits are weaned, and rehomed, she’s going in for spaying. ?

I am not a doctor. If she continues or there’s blood. Definitely call your vet.
