So about 3 weeks ago Dasher had extra cecals and smaller, darker poops. We only gave her hay for a few days and slowly introduced pellets and veggies again. Since then we’ve only been giving her about half the veggies she used to get and every thing has normal. This Sunday she started having darker poop of various sizes. Some were larger, some were smaller and some where stuck together. They were stickier and smellier. She’s only been getting hay since then and her poop has improved but it’s still not normal. She was having some egg shaped poo too. I had to let her outside yesterday so I could clean her cage and she ate some grass so idk if that’s good or bad for her but the grass is safe, no pesticides or fertilizers. Today her poop is mostly round but it’s smaller and not as light as it should be. Then she has a few poops that are shaped like a pill and some that are very dark and smelly and vary a lot in size. What could be causing this? Dasher is still acting normal and eating lots of hay. Sorry I went in detail about her poop but we all know how important rabbit poop is!

It’s very important indeed, don’t be shy about discussing rabbit poop!

Is she actually eating plenty of hay or could she be moving it around and not eating much?

It’s good she’s acting normal and having her on hay only is a great tactic to get her tummy back in order if it was a dietary issue. I’m wondering if she could have worms?

She does move her hay around but she has always liked making a mess of it. I always see her eat hay and she always gets excited when I give her fresh hay so I don’t think that is the issue.

Is there a way I could tell if she has worms or can only a vet tell? How dangerous is it?

If the poop that is stuck together looks a bit like a miniature corn (sorry guys) it is most likely a cecotrope. (Which is alright) However, if you meant that they were strung together almost like a sausage (sorry again), I believe that is a sign of of GI stasis. My solution for abnormal excrement was to take away veggies and pellets and see if they returned to normal. If yes, then I give the bunny a smaller portion. If no, then I go to a vet. Hope this helps!

I’m not really sure tbh, perhaps you could take a poop sample to the vet?

Ok I’ll see if my vet does poop tests. Dasher isn’t showing any signs of illness but I might just take her to the vet anyways because her poop isn’t improving. I was poking at it with a stick and the poop looks like its purely hay but idk why it’s hard and sticky and not crumbly. I’m going to be at my mom’s house for the next 2 days so I’m a little worried about leaving her but my dad knows the signs of stasis so he can take her to the vet if she stops eating.

So I was investigating her poop a little more yesterday and it is dark on the outside but then crumbly and light on the inside. It seems that the fur in her poop is holding it together. She isn’t shedding very much, just a little by her back feet and butt. She doesn’t like when I touch her there but I get as much fur out as I can. I also saw a small cluster of poops held together by a piece of my hair that she must have eaten.

So I’m back home and Dasher’s poop is bigger and lighter wich is good but some of it is still oval shaped. My dad gave her a little bit of lettuce yesterday and we gave some lettuce and cilantro today. Idk if she should still be on all hay but my mom said she looks a bit thinner so I don’t want her to lose weight and I want her to get some nutrients too.

I heard some stomach noises from her today and idk if its normal. It kinda sounds like someone’s stomach rubbling or like when I eat junk food and my stomach feels weird. My dad thought she was just hungry… Is it normal to hear stomach noises from bunnies? I’ve only heard her stomach make noises once before.

Stomach gurgling is gassiness typically for a rabbit. Sometimes there’s a gurgle from Wick after a lot of water intake (water sloshing in the stomach).

The hay is essential to rebuild your rabbits gut flora so it’s equipped to digest vegetables. I’d stick to one veggie type only, the safest one for your rabbit. Lettuce is pretty safe and non complex in terms of needed gut flora. Encourage hay consumption by cycling in fresh hay regularly. Eating is obviously very important, so if you feel your rabbit is not eating, giving veggies/pellets slightly more often until things are back to normal is fine; the trick is hay is least preferred, so a lot of rabbits will not eat hay so they can just eat pellets and veggies. So observe and see what’s best.

Even if shedding only occurs in a small area, a ton of fur comes off it. Do your best to groom as much excess off as possible.

…since most seem big and light, I’d say just paying attention to more hay consumption may normalize the poop back to normal.

In terms of weight loss, a lot of weight gain and loss can come from quantities of pellets and veggies given. How much do you give?

She had been eating a lot of hay and I refill it often because gets excited. Dasher is about 7 pounds and usually gets 1/4 of pellets, 2 leaves of romain lettuce and 5-6 strands of cilantro. I haven’t given her any pellets for a week and she just started having veggies yesterday but I’m giving her smaller amounts to not upset her stomach. I just don’t know what is causing the oddly shaped poop.

This has been going on for almost 2 weeks now. I’m going to ask my dad if we can take her to the vet. Her poop has been so inconsistent. It thought it looked better today but then on the inside its a bit soft and looked a little wet. She has normal sized poops as well as teeny tiny poops and still some wierd shaped poop too. She isn’t showing any other signs of illness so I wonder what could be causing this. I did hear some stomach rumbling and it was louder today than the last time I heard it.

I think you might be giving her too much veggies and pellets, and cilantro. Since she gets both pellets and veggies, you might want to decrease the pellet amount a little, or maybe the cilantro amount. Cilantro is more of a treat I think, and only an occasional thing. If she gets it every day, I don’t think it’s very good for her. It could be too rich for her stomach, which is probably causing the gas.

I haven’t given her pellets for 2 weeks. We did one week completely hay but nothing changed so I started give her a little of romain the past week so she gets the nutrients she needs. Some of her poop doesn’t even look like hay on the inside. Its like brown mush. Her poop does look better today but it will probably go back to being worse tomorrow as its been inconsistent.

Rain – a 1/4 cup of pellets and a couple romaine leaves and cilantro is definitely not too much. And cilantro is absolutely fine to give every day generally speaking.

Dasher – are you able to take a poop sample to the vet? Sometimes it can take a while for their tummy to bounce back but I would have thought there would have been a slight improvement after a week of just hay so perhaps it’s a little more complex than diet related? It couldn’t hurt to get a vet to analyse it, even if they just look with their eyes (as opposed to testing it) perhaps they can help decipher what’s going on?

sarah- I’m super sorry! I thought it was an occasional veggie. Sorry! I’m used to a diet for a small rabbit I guess, so I forgot that Dasher is actually seven pounds and not three! Yes, on the back of my pellets, it says for 6 to 8 pound rabbits, a fourth of pellets is okay. along with veggies.

My dad said he will call the vet monday and ask if they should test the poop or if they want too see her. After 2 weeks with very little improvement I know something is wrong and I want to make sure she is healthy so she can get spayed soon.

Dasher has a vet visit tomorrow. I had to put her back on pellets because she got skinny but she is fine now. I’m suspecting she also has a teeth issue because yesterday when eating pellets they started falling out of her mouth and then she chocked pretty badly and was drooling. I won’t give her pellets until she sees the vet.

Dasher got her molar spurs trimmed so hopefully that fixes the choking issue. When she pooped at the vet it was normal but the vet could feel the different sized poop in her. We got some probiotic to give her and if that doesn’t help then we’ll have to take her back. Right now Dasher isn’t very active and she just looks sad. Could her teeth be hurting her or maybe she is scared?
