hi all! i hope im not being repetitive on here but my bunny has been acting off lately. I took her to the vet about a week ago and she was diagnosed with a minor ear infection (yeast). The vet gave me drops for her ears, and Ive followed his instructions giving them to her twice a day. Since then, there’s been some changes in her behavior. My bunny is usually really mellow and sweet (also she’s spayed), but she’s become a bit of a troublemaker lately. She’s not really eating her pellets (2tsb a day) unless I put them right in front of her face, and even then she’ll eat about five then run away. She’s also taken up a habit of licking everything and pulling magazines off of the coffee table. She’s usually really good about using her litter box (except she’s always had an affinity for pooping on the couch), but I noticed that this morning that she had only pooped a few times last night. This leads me to my next question. I had plans to get my rabbit some more hay from the local rabbit shelter, but there was a snowstorm, and I had to get some from a nearby pet store. The switch was from Small Pet Select to Oxbow Western Timothy Hay which is much softer than Small Pet Select. Since the change, her poop has gotten smaller and much darker. Is this normal/a result of the switch? My final question has to do with the ear drops that Ive been giving her. My bunny isn’t very fond of the drops and tends to shake her ears and make every effort to get the drops out after I give the merdicine to her. As a result, some drops have fallen onto her fur around her ears and it’s become matted and stuck together. I tried to wipe it off with a slightly damp cloth but it doesn’t seem to do much. Does anyone have any tips to get her fur back to normal? Thank you all so much. I’m sorry this message is so long—Im a new bunny owner and I just want to make sure that she is okay.

Hi there, welcome! So sorry that no one has answered this yet.

It sounds like she still isn’t feeling quite right, and may be having some GI slowing. If her ears are still bothering her, it could be affecting her behavior, and perhaps be affecting her system as well. Softer hay can affect poops and make them darker, but less poops, small poops, and eating less pellets sounds like she could be in early stasis or having some other gastric issue. Is she eating her greens OK? Try offering extra wet greens to keep her hydrated and keep her eating.

I also wonder if maybe she licked up some of the medication and it could be affecting her gut?

I think you should call your vet tomorrow (are they rabbit savvy?). A rabbit not eating or pooping for 6-12 hours can be very serious.

For sticky gunk in fur, if it’s wet still you can put some cornstarch and gently comb it out. If it’s dried and crusty it will take some gently combing over time, but mostly you will need to wait until the fur grows out.

I don’t have any tips for the ear drops… except maybe petting her and while holding her ears down for a while to allow the to soak in.
