So, here we go again. Peanut is peeing outside the litter box. We managed to solve this issue before by putting hay in the litter tray – I had stopped putting it in there as they were eating from a hay pile on the floor without problems. No peeing or pooping on the hay whatsoever so I didn’t think the loss of litter habits was due to no hay in the tray but I figured we’d tried everything else! Would you believe it, instantly 90% of poops were in the litter box rather than on the floor and in about a week and a half Peanut only peed outside on 3 occasions. As opposed to 3 times every night! Fast forward to now and Peanut has peed right by the litter box 3 days in a row  I’ve no idea why! The majority of pee is in the tray thank goodness but it seems to be one or two pees during the night that he does outside the box. I hope it doesn’t get worse again as I’ve no idea the solution Because it happens during the night I can’t even see him doing it to try and herd him into the box. Gaaaah! Oh, to note, the pee is practically odourless so I don’t think he’s marking?

Outside of the deviant pees, there are occasions Wick pees right outside his litter box. I see it happen so I believe I know why for him. He’ll be eating hay and pooping in one corner, then realize he needs to pee. Because he’s been pooping in one corner, he doesn’t perceive that place to be a place he can pee anymore, so he hops out, pees, then hops back in. So for Wick, it’s because he doesn’t have the mind to shift his body and pee. That doesn’t surprise me though because he’s not very bright. But I forgive him slightly because he’s at the bane of his own standards of cleanliness. He doesn’t like peeing on his poop.

Wick is such a character  I did wonder if Peanut was doing it to spite me if he ran out of orchard during the night (still have timothy available in the 2nd litter tray) but apparently not as they had tons of both hays when I discovered the pee. Maybe it’s because I have been forever calling him PeePee and I’ve inadvertently shot myself in the foot

Blue will plop his butt up over the edge and pee if he deems the litter box too dirty, lol. Some bunnies are just incredibly picky!

Have you tried a bigger box. I have a large under bed storage box for Trixie and Daryl. I switched from two litter boxes shortly after they were bonded. There’s plenty of room for them both to move around comfortably. I’m wondering if they are both using the same box and he’s slightly pushed out meaning his bum is a bit perched over when he pees

The little monkey didn’t pee out of the litter box at all last night…but then did at 10am. The rascal.

Mikey I can definitely see Peanut being a picky bunny but I wouldn’t have thought the litter trays are too dirty. I empty them completely every evening so they aren’t too dirty during the night. But who knows! He is a little fuss pot!

Eddyw111 I originally thought about trying a storage box, that was going to be our next experiment if putting hay back in didn’t solve the issue before. They have two cat litter trays, they’re big enough for them to both squeeze in one together and the sides are pretty high so he can’t perch over them. I don’t think the trays are really big enough for them both but that’s why I have two. They just defy logic sometimes It would be easier if I could catch him in the act.
