I know that everyone is strongly against getting bunnies wet, and I don’t intend to get mine wet either, but I was always curious about wild rabbits.
What happens to them when it rains?
Here, in Canada, spring time is often chilly, and accompanied by large rainstorms.
Do the bunnies die en masse?

I think generally bunnies retreat into their burrows when it rains!

Wild rabbits have (usually underground) burrows that they either make or find. They often dig the burrows themselves but I’ve seen a family of bunnies at my barn that used an old tree trunk as their house! I’m sure they are great at seeking out shelter too if they don’t happen to be close to their home base.

They do retract to their burrows/warren when it rains. But water isn’t toxic to them or anything. It’s bathing them, submerging them in water, that can make them so terrified they die of fright. They can also get too cold if they have to run around with wet fur.

Bunnies don’t bathe much like cats don’t bathe. They keep themselves clean much like cats. If a cat or a rabbit in nature find themselves in a situation where they have to swim, they swim.

They go into their burrows which is like their houses. That so cool Rio and Buns that you found a family of buns!

Wild rabbits generally avoid heavy downfalls of rain, but, if they live in a particularly wet climate, like here in Ireland where your guaranteed rain almost daily, there’s no way they’d avoid it completely. The difference is, as bam said, that they aren’t being submerged in water. Their coats aren’t getting saturated. Like if you got caught in the rain, your hair (unless it’s very short or fine) will not get soaked to the roots unless it’s heavy rain or you’ve been out for hours, the top layer of loose hair may get wet, but your whole head wouldn’t.

So let’s say your rabbit was out wandering in the garden and your sprinklers came on, or it suddenly started raining, your rabbit will seek shelter. So unless your rabbit managed to get soaked through, you’ll likely find that if you run a cloth or even just a tissue over their fur, that their skin wouldn’t actually be wet. Fur is an amazing thing!
