Caroline has started to kind of stink up my room. I do not mind it but my mom is getting annoyed by it. I clean her litter box often but the smell is still there. I think its just from the poop and pee that used to be in there. My mom is not very fond of Caroline and wants to get rid of her! My Dad is always on my side and says we should keep her and so are by brothers. Caroline does not even touch her, she just stays in my room all day. I want to teach Caroline some tricks so my Mom can see how smart and cute she is and then want to keep her.. Do you guys have any rabbit safe ways to clean and get rid of odors, since I can not come up here and spray febreeze, what can I do to get rid of a little of the smell? Please and Thanks!

A splash of apple cider vinegar with the mother in her water will nullify the smell of urine. That’s typically the main cause of smell. The urine can be potent sometimes, but I never smell it anymore.

Also, I don’t remember how old she is, but territorial poops have a funk to them, so sometimes you need to be more diligent with cleaning those up right away.

Generally speaking, a trash can with a lid is recommended as well!

Ok, Do you mean I should put apple cider vinegar in Caroline’s Water?

I will get a trash can cover up the smell and will work on those territorial poops.

I heard people use a febreeze electric plug near their rabbit. Caroline does not like to chew on outlets so is that ok if I put one in my room.

Yep! Apple cider vinegar and apple cider vinegar with the mother are two different types. I believe regular apple cider vinegar has the same odor effects, but the mother is a bacteria that when ingested, help regulate a rabbits stomach digestion and keeps the fur looking nice, so I opt for that. If you get acv with the mother, you just need to shake it before splashing some in because the bacteria settles to the bottom.

So what I do is I dump Wick’s water bowl, fill it halfway, put a splash in (like a spoonful), and then fill the rest up. I do it halfway because I think it helps it mix with all the water.

                  Guess what,
While I was reading that my dad threw out all the apple cider vinegar…. Talk about bad timing.
What about the febreeze thing, have you ever tried it?

I think the general rule is stay away from fragrance items. I do not use febreeze. Do you use vinegar/water when cleaning to fully eliminate scents?

Yes I use water to clean but I think I will try your suggestion of the vinegar in the water, thank you! I just ordered a hay rack to keep all the hay in track. Hopefully Caroline wont keep stinking up my room.

Definitely avoid the febreeze! How often do you clean out the litter box and what type of substrate do you use? I use wood pellets and they soak up odours better than carefresh.

A mix of water and distilled vinegar to clean is very effective at removing odours so if you give the litter tray a quick wipe over when you empty it, I’m sure that will help. I actually just use vinegar on its own. Pour a little in the empty tray and wipe with kitchen roll.

Also, I don’t have any staining issues with the wood pellets but when I was using carefresh, I would see white staining at the bottom of the litter tray so I’d just soak it in vinegar for 10 minutes then rinse.

What brand of wood pellets do you use? I use paper litter so maybe I so maybe I should switch.

I just read that some vets say wood pellets can cause GI stasis.

I use plug ins in every room in my apartment…. those yankee candle liquid ones. Doesn’t seem to bother Ophelia at all. Also yes, paper litter gets super yucky. I use compressed pine pellet litter, it really keeps the smell in check and is a lot easier to clean up

I’m in the UK and use Pets at Home brand of non clumping cat litter pellets. Ordinary wood stove pellets would be fine, I just can’t find any over here. I think the issue with wood pellets is if they are clumping because if a bun ingests some, it can cause a blockage. So its really important to use non clumping.

I’ve switched to wood pellets and they’re amazing! Super absorbent & really control odor

Yes, those horse stall pine pellets are fine to use for a rabbit’s litter box.
