I am wondering if anyone has experienced this.
My bunny had his teeth removed several years ago (he is 6) due to a malocclusion.
He recovered great.
He does not react well to change, so on odd occasions, we have syringe fed him until he returns to normal (usually a day or two).
At the beginning of January, we went away and he was babysat. We are confident he was well cared for.
When we returned, I noticed he had stopped eating. I therefore immediately started syringe feeding him. After 2 days when I noticed he was not showing any interest in his food, I brought him to the vet. The vet thought he might have some tummy issues, so prescribed some antibiotics and pain meds.
After 3 days, no change – still not eating but hopping around.
I brought him back to the vet. This time, he felt a lump and thought he might have an abscess. He gave us a different type of antibiotics (for 14 days) and said to keep up with the pain meds until he starts eating. A week passed and no change – we kept up with the syringe feeding. I was pretty worried and brought him to a different vet.
Immediately the vet said he had a large abscess and needed to be operated on. He therefore had the abscess removed Monday and seems to have done well (although it looked pretty bad…poor lil fella).
We are now Wednesday and he still has no interest in food.
He is on antibiotics, medicam and an appetite stimulant since Saturday.
The vet called yesterday to see how he was doing and I expressed my concern over the not eating still.
They said they would check back in today as the medicine should be working.
The vet was also quite sure that the operation would turn things around.
It will be a month now that he has not eaten any food except for the food we syringe feed him (critical care, pumpkin, etc…)
He hops around like he always has, but just will not eat and drinks on his own very sparingly.
I have tempted him with every type of treat…I have been reading forums non stop to get ideas, but have never heard of anyone having a bunny go this long without eating on their own.
Thanks in advance for any advice or input!
