        Hi,

My 3 year old dwarf hotot rabbit humped my arm this morning while I was in the process of giving him his hay this morning. He got neutered a year ago and he hasn’t done anything of that sort and really chilled out. I’m confused if it has something to do with his hay, or that maybe he just did it out of excitement because he always gets happy and jumps around when he’s getting fed. It worries me that he did that. He eats alfafa hay (I know, not what he is supposed to be eating. Whenever I mix it in with either timothy hay or orchard grass hay, he eats around them and picks out the alfafa hay) which I don’t know has anything to do with his behavior. He doesn’t eat pellets. He’s on a strict hay and water diet with the occasional treats.

I’m not really sure about the humping. I’ve never heard about that behavior in a rabbit especially after being neutered!

My male bunny loves alfalfa hay and did the same thing as your rabbit which is picking it out and not eating the grass hay. As much as he loved alfalfa hay, I had to take it away. After that, he ate his grass hay. It’s like when you give a child candy and veggies, of course they’ll eat the candy and not the veggies. But if you take the candy away, they’ll eventually get hungry and eat the veggies. A 3 year old rabbit shouldn’t eat alfalfa hay, so it’s best if you just take it out of his diet. And does your rabbit eat veggies? Maybe that’ll help.

He might have just been a bit excited. My boy has been neutered for over a year and still occasionally honks and tries to hump my girl.

Oh don’t be worried! He sounds happy! I wish my male bunny was as active haha.

Also, if your rabbit is only on a hay and water diet and no pellets, according to the HRS, it’s best to supplement the pellets with veggies. Make sure your rabbit has fresh veggies the amount is 1 cup per 2lbs of body weight
