        Hello,

I have recently moved my bird cage to a new location
in my apartment and my bunny has decided to
turn the area underneath it into a makeshift
litter box. I put an extra litter box
in the location to avoid poop and urine on the
carpet. My concern is having the litter box
so close to the birds. Does this seem like
a hazard for the birds? I realize this question
is more about my birds’ health, but I figured
someone on this forum may have some good insight.

I have tried moving the litter box to the corner
near the cage instead of underneath it, but
she has no interest going there, and continued to
go under the cage. When the litter box is under the
cage, she uses it. Ideally I would rather she didnt
do her business in this area, but I do not know
        how to control this.

Maybe our forum leader Azerane knows something about this. She has a parrot as well as buns. I’ll go ask her.

Buns can be very stubborn about where they want to use the bathroom.

Hmm, I can’t see bun poop being a concern to your bird at all. Your bird doesn’t have access to it and bun poop tends not to carry any nasties. I would actually be more concerned about bird poop being a risk to your bun. If your bird cage has a good seed skirt though and no poop gets down through and obviously both areas are kept clean, then there shouldn’t be much of an issue. The times I would see issues arising is if there was bird poop on the floor that your rabbit is walking in or sniffing etc. I know a lady whose dog passed away because of an infection caused by some bird poop that she’d inhaled into her nose, I can’t remember what the infection was.

My rabbits are kept separate from our parrot cage, but my cat does have access to all around the parrot cage. I just have to make sure I wipe up any poop that may make it beyond the catch tray as soon as I find it and keep things clean in that area.
