        Hello everybunny,

My Josi was spayed a bit over a week ago (on Tuesday), so it’s been 9 days. The vert said everything was ok and they kept her overnight (they keep all females overnight) and we got 4 different meds for 7 days. Her stitches look fine.

She walks/hops strangely… like on tip toes, I haven’t seen any running around, and she has been kept in her play pen most of the time. Should she be walking/hopping normally by now? How long does it take for her to fully recover?

Also her appetite is much lower than before spay. She used to be such a piggy. She is eating but just less and doesn’t have her food enhusiasm like she used to have. I’m worried something is wrong, or does she just need more time? A week probably isn’t long enough. I just want my baby to be ok.

She also spends a lot of time just sitting or resting… doesn’t seem to have the energy she used to have.

I would be so grateful for some of your input on this and the length of the recovery of your female rabbits.

It’s great that you’re so observant! After 9 days, they should be largely back to normal. I’m afraid it’s probably worth another vet visit, just to make sure everything is ok.

My female bunny was tricky to get to eat after her spay, but once she was eating again, she was pretty much back to normal after about 2 days. I had to try and stop her from jumping up to the sofa etc.

According to the vet, Luna did recover super quickly, but I think the walking strangely is especially concerning. I do remember someone on here who had a ligament or something nicked during the spay which then caused walking problems. Hopefully that isn’t the case for Josi, but it’s definitely worth going back to the vet and asking for another opinion.

I agree with S&L, you should contact your vet again. After 14 days a girl should be completely healed up, so she should be a lot better after 9 days than she appears to be now. All of it is concerning, the weird gait, the lack of appetite and the lack of energy.

Get her checked out, she could perhaps need antibiotics and/or more painkillers. How is her poop?

Hi Josip, I see you posted this question twice so I’ll copy the response I wrote on your other thread

Hmm, I think it takes two weeks for females to fully heal. Having said that, I would have thought after 9 days she’d have been almost back to normal. Do you think she’s still a bit uncomfortable? Maybe she needs pain relief for a bit longer? My Buttercup recovered very quickly (in a matter of days) but I kept her somewhat confined for about a week or so.

Her appetite for pellets took a couple of weeks to return – She ate them but not with as much enthusiasm.

                Thanks everyone for answers.
I took Josi to the vet this morning. He said that she could be having some reaction to stitch material and inflamation and also that she appears to be more sensitive then other bunnies. He gave her another shot of antibiotics and painkillers, and more painkillers for the weekend and we agreed that I bring her back on Monday for check up.
I hope she starts too eat more or I will gave to feed critical care. She nibbled on a few pellets and some hay and dandelion today, but that’s it.
                I’m pretty worried ?

I’m glad she got antibiotics and painkillers. Hopefully that will help. It doesn’t sound like the vet was really alarmed, and that’s good!

When I had my bun spayed, it took almost a full month before she was eating regularly again. Before the spay she would be begging me to give her pellet dinner but after the spay she had no interest whatsoever. After almost 2 weeks she was at least eating all of her pellets by the end of the day. She never did go back to the way it was before (pigging out and eating the pellets in like 5 mins!), now she will eat them a bit slower and takes her about an hour to finish a tablespoon full.

I have some sad news since Friday 2 weeks ago.

We lost Josi a week ago after 5 days of battling GI stasis. The vet said she had mucoid enteritis that developed from GI stasis. She didn’t poop or eat on her own for 5 days. She was passing a lot of mucous and we were feeding her critical care multiple times a day. She was on lots of different meds and Monday and Tuesday morning I took her to the vet and in the evening went to pick her up because they don’t have night care. They did lots of different tests and x-ray, blood work, infusion, meds… she wasn’t responding to treatment.

The vets and we did everything we could… but I guess it wasn’t enough. We were heart broken. I miss her so much. We buried her next to her Cofi who passed away 1 month before her also of GI stasis (he was gone in less than 24 hours and had megacolon).

The vet was so great, he even let us come in on Saturday and than called us in the evening and on Sunday how Josi is doing. On Sunday she was better, but she got much worse on Monday and passed on Tuesday afternoon.

I wanted to update you and give information in case it helps somebunny else.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that how tragic.
It’s clear that you did absolutely everything you could to save Josi, I hope that is a small consolation to you in this difficult time.
She was obviously a very loved bunny.

Binky free Josi and Cofi <3

I’m so very sorry about little Josip. She was such a pretty girl. I hope she and Cofi are playing together in bunny heaven now.
