        Hey!

Simbi is 1 year old and it’s time to spay her. Last week she completely changed her behaviour. She started to pee and to poop everywhere. She also sprays the urine sometimes and she became such a fan of mine (licking, honking, lots of cuddling – i think this is cute but i what it means ?).

I already have date at the beat exotic vet in our country (Slovenia is very small ?). But while the day is approaching I am getting more and more worried about how Simbi will handle the situation. She’s never been in pain before or staying the night at the hospital. On the other hand she’s used to spend the night in different places with different people (during the week we live in a capital but on weekends we go home which is 40 minutes car drive away from the capital). I think Simbi is not so much afraid of unfamiliar people beacuse she lets visitors to cuddle her. She gets scared of new voices and movements a lot. She was already at the vet but only regular checks and nail clipping. My concern is that the whole spaying procedure will be too stressfull for her to handle.

I would really appreciate your stories with bunny females, concerns, fears, etc. just to calm me down a little bit beacuse I dont want to upset Simbi when the day will come. I want to feel confident with my decision and to start think positive. ?

P.s. I know all the reasons why that is necessary and important. I read everything i could so there’s no need to explain me that. ??

Thank you all for nice comments and help.?

        Ana

Hiya! Simbi is a brilliant bun name

I had my female spayed over a year ago, and I had the same concerns. In fact, I think we all worry when our bunnies are having something so major. A spay is very invasive but providing you have an experienced vet, there’s little chance of any issues. The main thing you want to watch out for is her appetite afterwards. It’s very important that she eat up until the operation itself (do not fast her) and that she starts eating as soon as possible. Make sure you get pain relief for her, as a bun in pain is less likely to eat. I’m not sure what the protocol is for your country but in the UK, my girl was given a 24 hour pain relief injection and then I gave oral pain relief every day for 5 days. She had a very quick recovery. She was spayed on a Friday and nibbled a bit Friday night, Saturday all she wanted was romaine lettuce and by Sunday she was practically eating normal. Not all females recover as quick but if she eats and is kept warm, she’ll feel a lot better.

In regards to keeping warm, you could try a bunny safe hot water bottle or a heat pad (with no wires) Mine had no interest in the heat pad so I moved her enclosure to be in front of a warm radiator and that really helped.

Spaying her really is the best thing for her. She’ll be a bit grumpy at you but once she’s feeling better, she’ll come round. Buttercup gave me the stink eye for about 2 days.

Oh, if you are able too, I would opt for some pre-spay blood work to be done just to make sure everything is working as it should. I never did for mine but in hindsight I wish I had (although I had no issues) It might help you feel at ease too.

          Good luck

I agree with everything Sarah said! The only thing I would add, is make sure you have some of her favourite foods in to tempt her to eat, and make sure there’s clean towels/fleece for her to lie on in her hutch so she isn’t getting the wound messy in her litter tray.

It took my girl a while to start eating after her spay, so the vets kept her in a bit longer, but once she started to eat she had a super easy and speedy recovery.

              I hope it goes well!
