        Good afternoon everyone!

So as you know, I plan on getting a rabbit in the near future, and I had a question about this certain type of hay.

This is the Standee Premium Western Forage Timothy Hay from tractor supply for about $15 for a 50lb compressed bale …

I checked the details, and it said this hay is fine for a rabbit.

Then I thought, “is this too good to be true?”

So I checked the QnA for this product on Tractor Supply, somebody asked if its safe for rabbits, and the answer from Standlee themselves was “No, do not feed this to your small pet, it is graded for livestock.

Now I am wondering if it actually is good or not, and it seems very fresh, and the only ingredient is second-cut timothy hay…I’m not sure how it could be unsafe for a bunny, so I want to see what some people on here would have to say.

Have you tried this hay? If you have, is it good for rabbits? Do you know somebody that has? Do you know anything about it and if it is usable? Should I avoid it? Etc…

        Thank you,

        Have a great day, -L

Hello hello. I am personally not experienced with this particular brand, but one note about buying hay in bulk is the longevity of freshness. When I start a new container of hay, it’s green and vibrant. By the end, the hay sort of browns to itself, just because of oxygen and time. It may be good to see what’s the best balance between bulk for your rabbit and then time it takes for your rabbit to go through it while it’s still relatively fresh.

A lot of the bunny people in my area swear by this stuff because it’s so cost effective. I haven’t tried it yet because my boys are insane about the Oxbow timothy+orchard blend. But they have tons of this at the local fair for the bunnies to munch on. So I’d definitely suggest it.

I’ve heard of that brand, but have not tried it myself. I agree buying in bulk is a big cost reducer. If you store the hay properly (ie. in a cool, dry place) then it will stay fresh for several weeks. After that, while it won’t be as fresh, it will still be good for months. I usually buy around 20 lbs. at a time.

I’m fairly sure I’ve seen a number of people using that sort of hay. If it’s graded for horses, it’s fine for rabbits. Do they say what makes it unsuitable for rabbits? If it’s for horses and livestock it should be free of mould and still green anyway, and hay for rabbits should be no different.

I use that hay. It seems good and my rabbit loves it. The reason they are saying the hay is not suitable for rabbits is because they want to sell you a more expensive hay that is specifically for small animals but hay that is good for horses is good for rabbits.

I’ve been using this hay since early December. Friends of Rabbits, the local rabbit rescue in the Washington DC area from whom I adopted Panda and Fernando, previously sold hay sourced from local farms, but around Thanksgiving there was a scare about possible toxic weeds having gotten mixed into the bales, so they went to look for a new source and settled on Standlee. Another local house bunny person (who lives across town from me, in fact) recommended Standlee, and lent me some right after Thanksgiving since I didn’t want to continue using the older hay. Panda and Fernando liked it, and they’ve been eating it heartily ever since.

I used to think Standlee only recommended their Grab’N’Go bales for horses for legal CYA reasons, but Dasher’s explanation makes more sense; hay is hay, and if it’s safe for one kind of herbivore it should be safe for another. The bale I bought in early December lasted for about 7 weeks, so I bought another bale last Saturday when I went to take the buns in for nail trimming. I buy it from Friends of Rabbits to help support their operations; it costs more than if I bought it from Tractor Supply, but I don’t mind.
