Hi guys, just went to give the buns a Blackcurrant Leaf and heard Buttercup’s tummy gurgling loudly. She didn’t looked hunched or uncomfortable as such and she ate the leaf without hesitation. I topped up their hay pile with oat hay to encourage hay consumption (oat is her favourite) and she’s eating fine. Poops looked normal this morning. Usually they both stop pooping at around 11am and start again at about 6pm so I’m not expecting poops yet. Do you think if she’s eating and pooping fine (later) the tummy gurgling is okay? All she’s had today is breakfast pellets and hay, nothing new. I just get worried because of her history with stasis even tho when she had stasis, gurgling wasn’t one of the symptoms  I stopped veggies just before Xmas as both were having audible gurgling but this was much louder  (I wanted to consult with a vet about it but ended up in hospital myself so haven’t restarted veggies again yet)

Did the gurgling occur while eating, or before? Some times Wick makes gurgle sounds when eating veggies, which I find synonymous when I drink water on an empty stomach— everything kinda just sloshes around as your stomach gets occupied.

You’re taking the right steps and monitoring well. Any noticeable gas bubbles? It seems pretty okay to me, unless it begins to occur throughout the day.

It happened the second she ate the Blackcurrant leaf but I figured it wouldn’t be the culprit as she’d only just swallowed it. She might have been gurgling earlier but I hadn’t been in the bunny’s room for about an hour before giving the leaf so can’t be sure. She’s eaten some oat hay and then let me give her nose a rub then hopped away, must have annoyed her  I topped up the litter trays with timothy and she came out to munch on that.

How would I detect gas bubbles? Her tummy looks okay but I don’t generally look at it til I hear something that panics me.

Typically I give Wick a tummy massage and I can tell there’s gas because I can physically move a bubble through him a bit. If all you feel are organs, fat, and bones, there probably aren’t any noticeable without an x-ray, if there are any at all.

Ah okay. Buttercup never lets me touch her tummy. I’ll have to work on that for future reference! The gurgling seems to have stopped as sudden as it started.

Wild guess, but I wonder if it could be like when humans are hungry? How our stomachs growl when we’re hungry or finally eating.

Hopefully that’s what it is! I’ve scheduled a phone consultation with the vet this week to query it and to also ask whether it’s safe for me to give veggies even if they cause a little gurgling.

She’s absolutely fine, woo! I spoke to our vet yesterday and he basically said if loud noises are the only symptom, then I shouldn’t worry too much. Which is great because she was still running for treats, eating hay and pooping nice big poops. So aside from the sounds, she was perfectly normal. He said keep an eye on it but not to panic unless she starts rejecting foods then of course bring her in.

In regards to veggies, we mentioned that we stopped them because of gurgling and he said if we want to give her veggies occasionally then that’s fine (again, so long as the noises don’t escalate) or we can try giving fresh grass and forage in addition to hay as that’s a nice middle ground between green veggies and hay and it’s much more of a natural diet for them. We told him we have recently started adding dried forage to her hay and he seemed happy.

So from what I can gather – loud sounds are not ideal but so long as she doesn’t show signs of discomfort then not to worry. Give veggies occasionally if we want but focus more on hay and forage. Phew!

Great news! I think being so attentive can cause extra stress – if the gurgling doesn’t progress, I guess it’s just belly noises…

How did you find the forhaymazing pets forage? I’m waiting for payday to order some more

So far, so good! I ended up ordering more forage – cornflower, sunflower petals and blackcurrant leaves. Oh and apple and pear sticks  Bunnies are quite partial to the sunflower petals and the blackcurrant leaves and the sticks!  The dandelion has a stronger scent than the stuff I usually get and the buns love it!
