We have been bonding Smokey and Bandit for about 3 months now (they’ve been neutered for 5 months) they have been doing so well! We flew through neutral space into semi-neutral it took a bit for them to accept each other in the pens but they did eventually and would spend quality time in each others pens. This past Saturday I got brave and took down the wall separating the pens and little furry minds were BLOWN! They seemed pretty happy they could be near each other. I slept on the couch the first night just incase but I didn’t hear any scuffling. Sunday morning Bandit was a little bossy chasing his brother but once I told him to “Get Get” (he associates this with stop and find something else to do) it was over.

Now last night and this morning Smokey seems a little off like he just wants to do his own thing. Hes eating and drinking but his poops are smaller then usual and there aren’t as many in the litter box. He did just finish moulting and he’s been having some string of pearl poops so it could be that or could it be stress caused by the over-zealous neighbour moving in too quickly? Should I put the wall back up and continue bonding before the wall stays down?

I would say you should rearrange the pens a bit before they move in, just so they don’t still have a MY space association, its much much harder to bond in the space that was previously theirs.

I would put the wall back up, mainly so that you can monitor that he’s pooping. It won’t set back the bonding, but will make sure that you keep a close eye on exactly what he’s eating and pooping. It could be stress related, but it could be the moulting. It’s very difficult to know!

I really would recommend rearranging and cleaning the space with vinegar before you move them into a permanent home together though.

I have put the wall back up and both buns are out cold in there own space! Smokey looks so tired from being kept awake by Bandit. Bandit is much much more hyper then Smokey is so he wants to play 24/7 when they are together and Smoke doesn’t get his good nap.
I spoke to our vet who thinks its most likely moult related and advised to push fluids and hay. Also mentioned to try papaya tabs but im having a hard time tracking them down. She also suggested fresh pineapple juice in small amounts. I will also try rearranging the pens before they move in together again.
