I woke up this morning to Sprocket next to my head and that eeary sound of higher pitched stomach grumble we all know too well and fear.
He was in a loaf and I could see him getting his tummy as close to the bed as he could. He even let me touch and check and I can tell there is a bit if gas and extension but not rock hard. So of course Spring out if bed mad sprint to get dressed and start call the ER vets on our list.

Now I called the vet in my area that I know takes rabbits but we have never been there and gave them the info above as well as that I last saw him eat some Parsley and grapes at midnight, and cameras show him eating hay at about an hour or so before that. He is not lethargic and is alert but in obvious discomfort.

It was now 4am when I woke up and he failed the treat test. I lost Rookie to all this so I was ready to go and had all the info. They said not to bring him in and to go to work which come back and see if things change for the better…. that’s past 6pm so how about a hell no on that. The other vets on my list don’t take rabbits and our vets don’t open till 8am.

I have some emergency cisapride on hand and I gave him 0.2ml which seems very little but it is what it on the bottle however he was much smaller then… even though the vet that told me not to come in said not to give it to him… come on!

I need to go to work at the very least to check in and ask to leave considering the circumstances which means I will be gone from 530 to at least 9am if not later which means the earliest he will get to a vet for is close 10am. I have cameras set up that I watch him on and can see if he poops or eats or moves around.

Thoughts?! Can I leave him until I can get our vet to take a look? I heard the high pitch grumble of the tummy as well as lower ones but considering my past with Rookie I am FREAKING OUT!!!!!!

Do you have simethicone baby gas drops? If you do, give him one ml then wait like 20 min. Try to get him to move around a little. You can also do a light tum massageand try to elevate his butt a little bit so gas can escape.Repeat baby gas drops. If the gas gets out, he might take a treat.

Leaving him for many hours isn’t recommended, but you do know that. Are his ears very cold?

This video on how to help a bun with gas pain might be useful:

Ovol drops are simethicone, so give him that. If he likes sitting in your lap that could be a good way of warming him up, plus it’d be easier for you to elevate his butt a little now and then. being close to you could help him too. That could tie him over until vet opens. Hopefully the gas drops will take effect sooner. I find they often do.

I have him about 0.25 of the gas drops. Keeping him warm now. I can’t believe this is happening

Try not to panic. I recently had this with Luna, and she has made a full recovery. What percentage of Simethicone is in the gas drops? I know with Infacol you can give 1ml, then an hour later another 0.5ml, so you can likely give him more.

You can also try and syringe some water into him, it’s important to keep them hydrated. Keep annoying him by poking veggies etc into his face. Luna would snatch them in anger and then once they were in her mouth she would eat them.

Do you have any leftover painkillers?

My vet gave Luna Loxicom and Zantac.

It’s good to keep him warm. He isn’t going to suddenly deteriorate before the vet opens, so keep calm! <3

                    (((sprocket)))

I’d try to bring him in as soon as you can! In the mean time the gas drops and tummy massages should help some!

The bottle says to give between 0.25 to 0.5 to babies to I figured he isn’t as big as those guys.
I flipped the couch over to its side so he can’t go under it so he had a bit of a walk around which is good.
I brushed him last night as I didn’t get a chance to do it for a day or two now and I remember telling him look all this will end up in the tummy we can’t have that.. . And now this

It says … each ml contains 40mg

Ok, that’s the same as Infacol, so I would give him another 0.5ml

Keep calm as Sirius and Luna says. I’ve done this with Bam several times because when gas happens it’s always in the middle of the night and no vets open.

If the Ovol is 40 mg/ml strenght you can give 1 ml. It’s very difficult to inadvertently overdose on simethicone because it’s not taken up by the body. It stays in the GI canal and comes out with the poop. I’ve given 0,5 ml of 100 mg/ml strenght. Then another 0,5 after an hour.

Pee is good. Bam has peed on the blanket in my knee during episodes of gas.

                                Have you seen any poop?

There is a single poop on the bed where he initially sat when I woke up and he has sat there since… hard to determine when it was pooped bit not fully dry yet so it may have been in the last 20mins… which would be amazing. But other than that one no poops

We made it. I would have preferred to take him to our regular vet but that is an hour drive while here was only 5 mins. I didn’t think he needed the stress of an hour drive on top of things.
Doc said his stomach is actually not that bad meaning it is still soft and not as rock hard as some cases are. His temp was thankfully normal but he was a but dehydrated. So he will be given sub q fluids here then will get meds for his tummy as well as critical care…
I can’t believe I didn’t think of critical care earlier. I even have it at home.
I feel like I’m cheating on my regular vet. I also can’t believe how many times we have been to the vet with him. I feel terrible. Are bunnies really this sensitive or am I just a terrible bunny parent?
I feel sub q fluids may be a bit of an overkill…. no?
But I know he was in pain and he does have a tummy problem so I want to make him better but also feel like an overreacting parent.
Ugh… I hope he doesn’t stay mad at me.

So glad you made it to the vet =) Sub Q fluids are good, they often perk a poorly bunny up. Critical Care shouldn’t be given if you suspect a blockage, so it’s best not to give it until you’ve seen a vet.

Some buns do have a very sensitive GI tract. You don’t strike me as aterrible bun parent =)

As always with buns, better safe than sorry! And he won’t stay mad with you for very long.

Luna had subQ fluids too and they definitely perked her up.

Bunnies are super sensitive, and good bunny parents spot these things early, so its not a bad reflection on you that you’ve been to the vet with him lots.

Hope the meds kick in and he gets better soon!

Just FYI, Luna perked up a lot after subQ fluids and injections, but the next morning she was back to not eating or pooping and had to be admitted… So don’t be too disappointed if this doesn’t solve everything. It seems with stasis its often up and down.

Well the ear infection was just like a circle spin… now finally our regular vet is stationary and at a new clinic so we saw her last week. Turns out Sprocket is allergic to the cleaner. So now we stopped all treatment on the ear.
So finally had that solved…. and now this…
For this he got the fluid, metacam, critical care and trimebutine.
I have him the critical care didn’t fight me too much on it. Then when he had enough he actively turned his head away. For now I think that’s okay to start I will give him more in a few hours.
With Rookie it was a 3day 5 vet visit ordeal and he never came back from it even though he had hay at 5pm and we were at the ER by 8-9pm so … it’s really scary. I took the day off today from work but tomorrow I’ll have to go in for sure. So we will see how it goes.
I can’t believe the ER vet this morning said wait till the afternoon.. ..and they were supposedly equipped for bunnies… yeah right…

I’m glad to hear Sprocket is ok! I think the sub-q’s were a good call. In fact, I have even “suggested” to an emergency vet to give Luna sub-q’s before. As Bam and S&L have pointed out, the fluids really do help . Any idea what could have caused the tummy trouble?

Not really. I’ve been reducing his pellets and alfalfa hay as I try to make him eat more of the other hay so put out for him . And this was my concern that he will just not eat instead and this will happen. But I don’t think that’s it. He is going through a molt so I try and brush him often but he seems to get bald spots from brushing so I try and do it enough but not too much. I brushed him yesterday and he took both the parsley and grape for it then after that was the all downhill part. So not sure.
He doesn’t seem to be perking up from the sub Q’s yet….

Many buns get GI trouble when they molt.

He is drinking and hopping around. No poops. No pee. He also just took 3 bites of hay but then walked away.

You should be seeing at least 1 poop very soon, if not already. Maybe it’s taking longer to see poops if he had a super empty colon?

His tummy isn’t as bloated as it was before so it’s pretty soft and feels almost empty… but he is still grinding his teeth at times…he won’t take greens, pellets or any more hay
