Both boys have had mites before, so I know what to expect. I was petting Bombur last night when I noticed he had a lot of dandruff. It was mainly towards his behind, which is where I know the do frequent the most. He’s going through quite the heavy molt right now, so I just want to be sure I don’t have to take them to get Revolution again. He doesn’t appear to be scratching, but like I said there’s a ton of dandruff. It’s also been extremely dry in Massachusetts, so maybe it’s also dry skin? It just doesn’t look like when he had mites back in September. Thoughts?

Aw crap! when I was doing lots of bunny research I came across lots of stuff talking about “walking mites” that present as looking like dandruff :/ Have you looked into that as an option?

They’ve had that before, and it looks different than that. That’s why I was wondering if it could be something else. The walking mites didn’t crumble when you squashed them with your fingers, what he has now does. The dandruff is also a lot smaller this time, whereas before it was like actually big chunks of skin coming off.

I wonder if it’s just skin irritation then, made worse by the molt because of all the fur?

Wick’s two sources of “dandruff” have been:

                1) Result of ringworm (accompanied by fur loss)
                2) Result of scab formed by injection. Flakes were concentrated in an area and I went searching for the source. Eventually I found a scab that was producing them. I can’t find it again though, so it’s healed, haha.

Aside from those two, unsure of what else could cause dandruff. If you part the fur and look at the skin, does it look dry or healthy?

It does look a bit dry. Not scaling or anything like that, but you can tell it doesn’t look the most supple at the moment. I put coconut oil on his ears when those get a little dry, but I’m hesitant to do it on his bum. I guess a vet visit couldn’t hurt just to be sure. We did skip the second dose of treatment for their mites a month and a half later but they were both fine and showing no symptoms

I wonder if the dry climate could be affecting them during a molt because the loose fur build up makes it harder for moisture to get in? That might be dumb, I’m just spit-balling now!

When Wooly is molting, he sometimes has a few large “flakes” here and there. It’s because his fur comes off in chunks. But he’s got wool though too. Hmm… I would say some flakes are probably normal, especially if there are no other signs of mites.

I haven’t noticed any flaking yet, but Choo had a blessed respite from moulting for about three weeks during our “cold” winter break, and has now resumed his neverending moult with a vengeance… and developed drier than usual skin in the process. I’ve started him on black-shell sunflower seeds to encourage his coat to blow and be done with it, but also to moisturize his skin.

Bam has had dandruff during molts. When he had fur mites he had skin-colored “scabs” as well. They were very firmly attached to the skin and couldn’t be plucked out, it was clearly painful for him when I tried to.

I think I’d wait and see. If it gets worse you’ll notice.

Thanks guys! And Q8, I totally get what you mean! Bombur has honestly been molting since July without a break!
