Was petting my sweet girl yesterday and I felt something round and hard. Thought it was matted fur even though she is meticulous in her grooming. But no its a bump or lump or cyst about size of a chickpea. Its covered with fur. She doesn’t flinch when I touched it. She is already about 7; someone dumped her by a park 6 years ago. I’m freaking out a bit. Making an appointment with vet but hoping someone can give me a heads up. Internet images were not helpful.I cant take a picture because it’s covered with fur.

Can you describe the location? That could give people a better idea of what it could be.

It would be best to know where it is, yes.

Does it feel superficial (attached to the skin and so “detachable” from the body) or profund (not movable)? Does it feel hard solid or is it soft/squishy? Is she scratching or licking it?

Wow thank you for taking the time to get back to me! It is at the back of her head on her neck. It is hard not squishy at all. She hasn’t acted as if she even notices its there. I can’t tell how its attached because her fur is still all there. Its not like a skin tag which is on a kind of stalk. I cant feel under it. I’m tempted to cut the fur away but she doesn’t like being manhandled and I don’t want to hurt her. My daughter is going to check it out too when she gets home.

My daughter sent me this text “So, nellies spot is white, feels a little squishy when I put pressure on it, so I guess like a pimple. It’s smaller than a chickpea. Definitely the size of a pea. I irritated it by touching it. She scratched the area after I stopped. It’s on the right side in the back of her neck in the crevice, almost on her shoulder. Has some hairs coming out it it but not completely. Skin on the bump looks dry and flaky.”

It sounded like a picture of a small cyst I had seen on google images. BTW they should put warnings on the internet’s descriptions and images of pus; totally horrifying. I help my mother care for my father so Tabetha and I “share custody.” We couldn’t get together until last night to “compare notes.” I wanted to thoroughly check every inch of Nellie. She wasn’t thrilled but didn’t seem more agitated than usual at being constrained. I can’t say its white or dry and flaky because I really can’t make it out. Tabetha’s eyes are better than mine; I just see downy white fur where she sees white skin. She’s right about size; definitely small, pea sized. I was able to get my fingers to go around it. It kind of moves or rolls around. Nellie hasn’t been bothering it and there’s no swelling or inflammation. We did a thorough body check, even tried checking her mouth because we kept reading stuff about infections in teeth/jaws. Thank God, nothing.

Afterwards, she was very relaxed when we stroked her head & rubbed her cheeks. Limited foot stomping! She’s still ignoring it and eating/pooping normally.
I’m more relaxed too. I called the vet who didn’t think there’s cause for alarm. We’re going to take Nellie in as soon as weather is better; we’ll drive poor Nellie nuts checking and double checking until we do.
