› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Help! No poop after spay!
Hi All!
This question has probably been asked before; I just can’t find any info.
I had my bun (Fiddle) spayed yesterday afternoon. She’s nibbled a few herbs and spinach, but not pooped. This morning I call the vet and she said to make a mash of veggies. Fiddle has eaten some of that. I put some chamomile tea in her pellet food to make a slurry and she had a bit of that too, also drinks a little bit of water if I hold it up to her.
But she won’t poop! She urinates though.
I’m not sure what to do… She’s on pain meds. I feel like force feeding her won’t do much good since she’s already eating some stuff. Unless she just needs a lot more to be able to poop.
Any quick help would be fantastic! I’m very concerned!
Thank you!
You’re right to be concerned because it is very important to get her pooping. If I were you, I would try to syringe feed her some pellet mash. It’s good that she will nibble, but at this point she really needs to get on producing some poop and keeping that GI tract in motion to avoid stasis. Can you give her more veggies if she will eat that? My female didn’t want to eat ANYTHING besides romaine lettuce after her spay. I just gave her several servings of it so that she would eat, and by the next day she was starting to eat other things too.
Thanks for replying! I have tried to feed her spinach, cilantro, parsley and carrots. She will eat this–a couple leaves and such, more than just nibbles, and she has eaten over a tablespoon of the mash–probably two or three if not more. How much would she need to start pooping? I hold it up to her mouth in a spoon and she’ll take it.
And how much water does she need to drink?
The vet said to bring her in tomorrow morning if she has not pooped by then.
Thanks!
It’s great that she’s eating the mash, and the amount you estimate she’s taken should be enough to get her to poop soon.
She probably doesn’t need to drink extra water because she gets water in the mash and the vegs.
It’s important that you keep her warm, sometimes buns get cold post surgery. Feel her ears, if they’re very cold she could need warming up with hand warmers or a hot water bottle in a towel.
I do agree you should go back to the vet if she doesn’t start pooping soon. The poops can be small and misshapen, but that’s normal after a gut slowdown. The important thing is that there is poop. Is she moving around at all?
I think it’s a little difficult to give a quantifiable amount of what she needs to eat.
Have you tried adding smushed bananas in the mash? Bunnies usually can’t resist some yummy banana
I think you can try feeding apple sauce too. Obviously you don’t want to just overload her on sugar, but try adding something sweet to the mash to entice her to eat it.
As for drinking, Ophelia didn’t seem to drink like anything for two days. She was eating a lot of lettuce though so I know she was getting water. But since rabbits don’t really drink all that much anyway, I’d be more concerned with the eating/pooping. Does she have a bowl or a water bottle? If she has a bottle I suggest offering her a bowl too. It’s easier than a bottle and she will get more out of it with less work.
Good luck with her, hope she starts to poop!
Thanks for all the advice! She moves around a little bit, but very little… she hunches in her litterbox and then lays down sometimes. I made a rice sock to warm her but she doesn’t seem like she likes it too much. Her ears are cold though!
I did put bananas in the mash and carrots. Applesauce is a good idea–I could put an apple in as well… She has a water bowl and I have to hold it up to her so that she can drink. She doesn’t move over to her own food and water…Thanks so much for the help!
Has she begun pooping yet? If not, it’s definitely time to get back to the vet!
Hmm, what dosage of pain relief is she on? She could possibly need more?
Thank you, everyone!
She started pooping just last night and is eating hay and veggies and even her Oxbow Pellet Food this morning! I’m so relieved!
The vet is taking her off the pain meds today and she seems like she is doing fine so far! I will keep watching! Thank you all so much for the advice!!!
I was instructed to give pain meds for only 3 days but I had enough doses for 5 so I gave it for 5 just to make sure she was comfortable. But that’s great news- glad to hear she is on her way to recovery!
Yes, about that! I thought that only a couple days of pain meds seemed short. The vet said I was welcome to come back for more if she showed signs of pain… Anybody have any thoughts on what I should look for? I want to make sure she’s comfy…
Personally, I would just ask for a few more doses and give it to her for a full 5 days. A spay is a really big surgery and, in my opinion, 5 days of pain management ensures that she stays comfortable during the toughest of it all!
Yay for poop and yay for eating!
Signs of pain in a bunny are for example lack of appetite, a (marked) tendency to withdraw from social interaction, loss of litterbox habits (can for example sit or lie down in their own pee) and weirdly, the fur can look less glossy and neat, perhaps because stress (and pain is a form of stress) induces some shedding. But rabbits are expert at hiding pain and illness and will do their utmost to appear normal and healthy, so it’s very difficult for us humans to know how they really feel. Nowadays many vets prescribe 5-7 days of Metacam after a spay.
I had the same thought…I’ve been watching her very closely ever since she went off the meds, and she’s hopping around and eating carrots and hay–even doing some renovations to her cardboard castle
So right now it seems she’s doing just fine without the meds. She even had to give me a nice long groom last night! She also has no trouble hopping over to her litter box and using it. She hasn’t had an accident since the surgery!
Anyway, will keep a close, close eye on her to make sure she doesn’t show any signs of pain.
Thanks for all the help! Fiddle appreciates it as well!!!
It sounds like Fiddle is doing great!
Glad to hear Fiddle is doing better!
