I’ve stumbled upon a seller on etsy selling dried pine cones and I’m wondering if they have any sort of benefit (fibre for example?) for rabbits or are they just a fun chew toy?

I personally always avoided pine cones cause they’re kinda crumbly (bad description I know) and I’m afraid K could hurt himself with splinters since he’s missing two molars or maybe if the cone wasn’t properly treated I’m afraid there could be some leftover resin hiding deep inside it :/ So I stick to apple tweaks, he loves to chew off the bark of those.

Not sure if there is a benefit other than a chew toy, but Bunston used to loooove pine cones. There was one specific type he really liked. Bertha doesn’t really give them any attention. I think they are fun/interesting to chew. Bunston would toss, chew, and “attack” his with his front feet. My understanding is once they are dried (and no longer oozing sap) they are safe.

I’ve always just collected them myself though, not bought them! In that sense I think they are nice for folks not wanting to spend tons of money on things that will get destroyed in 30 seconds.

Ophelia likes her pinecones, but I’m sure that it’s just because they are dipped in fruit puree I would give her like 1 a week (and no extra fruit that week) because they had the fruit on them so it was a high sugar snack. She is such a non-chewer and so I try to encourage her to chew so that her teeth stay in check!

Thanks for the input guys! The seller said they are dried to kill any bugs and no pesticides are used. I’ll see what the buns think of them.

Dana I’d love to pick my own but I live in a rough area and don’t trust they’d be safe even if i dried them lol
