Our male rabbit has had dandruff on the edges of his ears that has been very itchy for some time. The vet had looked at them and said he seemed just fine and that she thought it was allergies because he was having respiratory issues unrelated to illness as well.
Today I noticed him repeatedly trying to itch a spot down by his tail, and being a little round he kept falling over, so I helped him out and gave him a good bum scratch. He loved it but I noticed he seems to have dandruff there too.
Now I’ve read that a lot of times dandruff in rabbits is associated with mites, so my question is this: if by chance it was mites, wouldn’t his mate be showing signs of it as well? She is always snuggled with him and grooming him (particularly the itchy spots on his ears) but her skin is silky and perfect.
        Any thoughts?

Not always, they can both have mites and with one showing obvious signs and another one not really. My boys had mites in September. Asriel was very flaky but he wasn’t scratching. I didn’t notice anything on him until a day before my vet visit. Bombur was itching a ton and had a big scab on his shoulders from it. They are easily transferred from bun to bun, especially in close quarters like that. Have your vet take a skin sample from one or both. If it is mites you’ll get Revolution and told to go back in a month for another dose if it hasn’t cleared up. After that, thoroughly clean both cages and the environment to prevent them from getting infested again. Also put any toys in the freezer.
