› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Luna has stasis *home*
On Friday evening, Luna suddenly turned on Atlas, and bit his ear. I separated them, as obviously I couldn’t leave him in danger. I kept them apart all day, and Atlas seemed SO much happier :/ Luna was fine and eating and pooping on Friday and Saturday. I tried to put them back together in the bathroom yesterday evening as though she was eating, Luna had seemed mopey and depressed all day without him, but she immediately lunged at him and pulled out a chunk of fur.
She hasn’t eaten any of her veg overnight, and will nibble at hay if I hand feed her pieces. This morning, she’d only done a few teeny dry poops, so I’m worried she’s in stasis, I’ve syringed her 1ml of simethicone just in case it’s gas and managed to get 1ml (such a tragically small amount ?) of water down her. I’m waiting for the vets to open in half an hour.
Did she attack Atlas because she felt ill on Friday? Or is she ill now because they’ve been separated?
Nimbus is obviously an extra factor that’s been affecting their relationship for the past 2 months, so it could be related to him, but we’ve had him for 8 weeks now so I’m not sure why it would affect her now.
Also, my vet office sometimes doesn’t have a rabbit specialist in on Sunday – is there anything I should make sure they do? Subq fluids?
Sending some {{{vibes}}} across for Luna.
It’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario isn’t it. Im leaning toward her out of character behaviour being due to not feeling right. As for Nimbus, I suppose he could be the age where hormones are coming in and changing his scent and smell of urine. But Id be surprised if it’s enough to cause her to go off food.
Would she eat some baby fruit puree? Fresh grass or some other forage? My “go to” foods are willow and rose leaves.
ETA: regarding treatment, subQ fluids could help, along with motility med and pain med. Some vets just give ranitadine (zantac) rather then metaclopramide or cisapride.
Thank you jerseygirl!
She’s now eaten some wet parsley, but still refusing pellets and hay, and haven’t seen any normal poops. She also decided to nibble a bit of Christmas tree as we were taking it out… not sure that that’s ideal but if it’s what she wants to eat ?
Nimbus is in a different room, so he shouldn’t really be affecting her I wouldn’t think.
She has definitely perked up a bit, but I’m still taking her to the vet, as this is the only window that they’re open today so I don’t want to leave it and have her get worse.
Glad to read she took the parsley.
Rabbits can be so weird when like this and all the favourites are snubbed, but they’ll eat something they’ve 1) never had before or 2) turned their nose up before.
I hope the vet will be able to discern what is going on and help her out. You might even find the ride to the vet helps! Ive had that happen before. The motion must have helped move some gas or something.
Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear this
How old is Nimbus now? Old enough for hormones…? Although I’d probably assume she took frustration out on Atlas due to feeling poorly. We all know bunnies hide sickness so she would have been feeling a bit rough before showing symptoms. Vibes for Luna xxx
Nimbus is just over 4 months now – but when we took him to his first vet appointment at about 11 weeks he already had visible testicles so I assume he’s been hormonal since then? Or do they not necessarily coincide?
Sorry to hear this about Luna. Tricky one! Are you taking Luna and Atlas together to the vets, that may help ?
It could be Nimbus coming of age… or a mixture. So hard to tell.
Or maybe its Atlas having some sort of hrmonal reaction to Nimbus’s coming of age which is making Luna uncomfortable….??
((((luna)))
No, she was really vicious towards him yesterday evening, I didn’t want to risk putting them in a small space together. And Atlas seemed happy to be away from her, so I didn’t think it was fair on him.
We’re now at the vets, waiting to be seen. She’s stomping in her carrier, which I guess is a sign of spirit at least.
Good luck. (Ps what vets is open on a Sunday??) what part of London?
We go to the royal veterinary college in Camden – they have a vet attached called the Beaumont sainsbury with 3 exotics specialists ![]()
Oh well then. Nothing better than the RVC !!!! You should be in good hands. ((( Luna )))
Theyve listened to her gut, and said there are SOME sounds, which is a good sign, but not as many as there should be, so she is in stasis but we caught it early.
Since she’s still relatively bright they said they don’t think they need to keep her in, but we can monitor and bring back in the morning if needed.
They’ve given her subq fluids, an anti inflammatory, an anti acid, and gut stimulant (emeprid, loxicom and zantac) injections.
She weighed 1.98kg (writing down for my own records)
Ok. So you need high value treatiepops, and a gentle finger massage under belly, lifting bum slightly to help those farts fly out. ![]()
Thanks guys!
She’s eaten a small bowl of mixed damp greens, and is munching away on pellets now. Still no poops though.
The vet said often people don’t bring their rabbits in until 4/5 days of not eating so she was impressed by how lively Luna was. can you believe it? ?
(((((Luna)))))
Great that she’s eating! Hopefully poop will soon follow!
It’s sad that people tend to wait that long before bringing the bun in. With dogs, they always say “He’ll eat when he’s hungry” and in 99 of a 100 cases, the dog will eat when it’s hungry. But buns are not dogs =(
Thanks Bam.
Still no poops ? should I try syringe feeding her some more water? She had quite a lot subcutaneously at the vet 5 hours ago, but she doesn’t seem to have drunk at all.
Ok, we have bunny poops! ![]()
Yay for bunny turds!! Phew!
Has she continued to poop? Is she eating still?
I can’t believe some people wait for 4 to 5 days of no eating before seeking vet care. How do their rabbits survive?! I wait less than 12 hours…
They’re pretty teeny poops still, but quite a few of them
I think we’re getting there. And she’s enthusiastic about some food and has been eating hay, so hopefully she’s on the mend ![]()
It sounds like she’s on the right track
Yay!
(((((Healing Vibes for Luna)))))
She had done a big pile of normal poops (50+) before I went to bed, ate a lettuce leaf, was hopping around, lively and totally normal. I left her munching on hay. I thought she was back to normal, maybe naively.
But when I got up this morning she was back to being hunched in the litter tray and it doesn’t look like she’s eaten anything. She won’t take any veg, apple, banana from me. I got her to nibble one tiny dried willow leaf.
This makes me think there must be an underlying issue. Does it sound like teeth? Or is it loneliness?
Back to the vet we go.
Hmm, when Buttercup had stasis the most recent time it was very up and down over the course of a few days. No underlying issues and she made a full recovery and has been fine since *touch wood*
Thanks for the reassurance Sarah!
She’s just been admitted to the vets – they’re keeping her in so they can keep going with the intravenous fluids and pain meds. They said it sounded like she perked up in time with the medicine and deteriorated again as it wore off yesterday.
She also had small sharp points on her back left teeth, but the vet said she didn’t think it was bad enough to be the cause.
They’re keeping her in for 24 hours to try and get her eating again, but if she’s not getting better in that time then they’ll start doing some tests tomorrow.
At least she has a fighting chance. I’m sure she’ll be just fine. Vibes for you and your trio and most of all (((Luna)))

I lost track of how many times we were going to and from the vet plus she had an overnight stay but as I said, no underlying cause. It was just a tough period.
If Luna’s teeth were the cause I would have thought it wouldn’t have come on so sudden but perhaps worth looking into?
((((Luna))))
My Yohio had very small molar points the first time he had them burred. The burr was preceded by 3 weeks of syringe-feeding, because the vet couldn’t find anything wrong with him. So eventually, she decided it could be his teeth after all. I don’t know if it really was of course, but 5 days after the burr his appetite was back to normal again. 6 months later, he needed another burr.
Thanks guys.
I guess we’ll look into the teeth tomorrow if nothing improves today. It’s been very drastic though for it to be teeth- munching away on a normal amount of hay up until Saturday. Although I guess with two buns its harder to monitor who is eating exactly what.
Was Yohio eating normally and then suddenly not Bam?
Haven’t had an update from the vets yet, so guess all is ok/the same.
Late to this, but sending vibes for (((Luna)))). Get better darling girl!
What a scare! Good decision to admit her to the vet, I hope that she’ll be back on track soon! Sending you all the (((vibes)))
Thanks!
They said that I could take her home and try oral meds, but they would rather keep her in. I have to work today so I know they can monitor her better than I could. They also have exotic-specialised nurses that look after them all night too, so its pretty comprehensive.
It sounds like she’s in the best place and in very capable hands *hugs*
Just heard from the vets, Luna has pooped loads overnight, and has eaten a bit by herself. She’s been very good about syringe feeding apparently (very unlike her to be good about anything, but she probably thinks it’s a new way of human slaves worshipping her…), so she’s coming home this afternoon
She’ll be sent home with some medications, but hopefully she’ll be a bit happier and able to eat more by herself at home.
They’re assuming there’s no underlying issue UNLESS she relapses again after this. Apparently she doesn’t seem like dental bunny :/
Hurrah for poops! Keep on going girl ^_^
Sounds good so far!
Pets typically are more compliant with people they don’t know. A vet tech can often clip the nails of a bunny or dog that wouldn’t let the owner anywhere near their paws.
Yay, excellent news! Well done Luna, I’m sure once she’s home and comfortable she’ll be back to eating happily again ![]()
It’s hard to say. Nimbus could be the variable that made her act out, and the necessary separation could be the trigger for her poorly tum. I’m tempted to recommend that you keep her eating and pooping and give it time, but sometimes one needs to be more proactive about resolving the underlying cause (some bonding/rebonding exercises??)
Either way, continued (((Luna))) vibes from us.
Thanks guys
looking forward to getting her home.
Q8 – my plan was to have her housed next to Atlas, but not able to touch him (prebonding style). I’d like to keep her separate for the first few days anyway, so that I can monitor her eating and pooping carefully, but hopefully being able to see and smell him should be enough to console her if it is the separation? If she’s doing well, I’ll try some bonding sessions at the weekend.
Having thought about it more though – Luna lost her first bonded partner, Sirius, and she didn’t ever seem the slightest bit upset by that, so I am doubtful now that the separation was the cause. To be honest I always thought her and Sirius had a better bond than her and Atlas too.
My boyfriend also fed them some cabbage on Friday, which I normally avoid as I know its problematic for some bunnies, so I’m wondering if that might have been the original trigger.
Hmm… maybe. Cabbage and related veg make Choo gassy.
Glad you are able to bring her home today.
((((Luna schpoona))))
We’ve got her home, with oral loxicom and Zantac.
I have to say she looks nowhere near as good as I was hoping. She has pooped quite a bit since she’s been home but she’s still huddled in her litter tray and not eating. I’ve just given her her evening dose of meds so hopefully they’ll perk her up soon. She also hates the car at the best of times so maybe needs a bit of recovery time from that too :/
Aww no, poor girl! So hard to watch them struggling like that. How is Atlas doing without his friend?
The good news is she’s home! Hopefully she’ll continue to improve on the meds and being near her bun mom and Atlas ![]()
Give her some snuggles from me. It’s so hard to see them unwell. (((((Feel Better Luna)))))
Thanks for all your support guys ![]()
Shes still definitely not back to normal, but she has been voluntarily eating hay, and mountains of parsley
(it’s the only green she is interested in, I have no idea why, it’s not normally a favourite). I decided not to feed critical care (vets said I probably wouldn’t need to – they almost didn’t send me home with any) as I thought she was getting just about enough food, and I didn’t want to cause her more stress.
She’s also done quite a few excess cecatropes – but I guess this is because she was getting CC at the vet, and its pretty nutrient rich?
Also seems to have lost litter tray habits ![]()
Extra cecals is probably due to the CC.
Loss of litterbox habits is probably because she’s not feeling well.
Please keep improving, ((((Luna))))
I’m glad she’s back home with you =)
Yay, more great news
BTW: parsley is a strong diuretic, we found this out the hard way with Breintje. We’d taken him to the vet twice already for his pee issues, but we had no idea that it was the parsley that we had introduced to his diet. He loves it too, and will eat whole bunches if you let him. But it made him launch huge streams of pee all through his cage, and he drank like mad. We thought he was developing diabetes or kidney issues. When I told my dad he started to laugh. In his native Limburgish dialect the word for parsley “piskroed” can be translated as “pissweed”… Subtle, but great folk wisdom. Appearantly it’s been a folk remedy for ages, even for humans. Breintje occasionally gets one or two sprigs nowadays, and it’s become our first test to check if he’s ill. If he’ll refuse parsley it’s time to get the tummy meds out!
Best check if it doesn’t make her pee like a mad weasel, and that she drinks enough to stay hydrated. If it doesn’t affect her so strongly, let her enjoy it lots
All the best for little Luna, keep on getting better!
Thanks Ellie.
I was aware parsley wasn’t great in huge doses, but thought in a stasis situation anything she wanted to eat was fine… Maybe I’ll try some coriander instead this evening. I remember Wick can’t have parsley either.
Piss weed
hilarious.
Yep, I’m careful when feeding parsley to Panda and Fernando for those reasons. They get it every 2-3 weeks with their weekly greens (this week, in fact), and only as maybe 10% or so of their evening salad bowl, and that their water bowl is full and refreshed twice-daily.
Glad to read she’s doing better
If you have some, you can try to offer her sage, mint and basil. My bun appreciates them a lot, even if he gets them only as a treat every now and then.
Litterbox issue can be because she’s not comfortable making the little jump to get in, or she’s just still a bit sore in general and isn’t keen on moving around too much. Time to clean extra, I guess. But at least it’s that kind of cleaning that you always are happy to do ![]()
S&L and Ellie – Yeah. No parsley for Wick ever. Never again. His tiny bladder can’t take its strong diuretic powers. I could hear his pee stream from across the room, it was so intense and massive…. And frequent.
When Wick is uncomfortable from dental problems, he stops peeing in his litter box, so discomfort and potential increased need from parsley could be contributing to the temporary lapse in litter box habits.

Well she’s actually been lying in her litter box and peeing out of it… So maybe she decided not to pee in it since she was enjoying lying in it?
I’ll try some different herbs this evening though, but it was the only one she was interested in on Sunday. I just got excited because she was so enthusiastic about it.
K has done that too while recovering. Probably they feel safer by being somewhere that has a strong smell of them? Just wondering
If it’s happening how I’m imagining it, I think it’s just the result of rabbits not knowing we want the poop and pee to land in the box, not them just in it.

Glad to hear she’s eating!
I have never had any issues with Ophelia and parsley! In fact, I have been giving her a little bit for the last three days because I made a dish with it and had all of this leftover parsley. She doesn’t get it often at all because I know of it being one of those high oxalate herbs.
What about other herbs? My sister had an herb garden for a while and Ophelia nommed on everything- basil, mint, lavender, oregano, thyme, rosemary… can these herbs be given often or should they be limited as well?
Ellie- I always love your stories, cracks me up! ![]()

Most other green herbs are fine according to HRS. I generally get P&F sage, mint, dill, or cilantro from week to week as accents to their daily green salads – the last two weeks, it’s been cilantro and then parsley, so it’s probably time for them to have some sage (one of their favorites, with the caveat that I used to offer it to them as treats but Fernando doesn’t much seem to care for sage by itself though Panda does).
Ophelia loooooves sage. I haven’t been giving too many fresh herbs lately because my sister killed her garden, but I have the dried herbal blends from SPS and she really enjoys those….but we may need to get back to fresh herbs because the blends are quite expensive. I thought that I read that others were fine, but you can never be too sure when it comes to the buns! Thanks Joe ![]()
It’s totally fine to feed it to her if it doesn’t affect her so strongly as it does Breintje and Wick. Of course, in case of stasis, we’re all glad if she eats at all. But I wanted to warn about the possible diuretic effect when taken in large quantities, because it’d be a real tragedy if she got dehydrated on top of her current condition
@Wick, same here: I’d nearly recommend him to the local fire department. I know guys love to brag about being able to produce a massive stream, but this was a bit too much for my taste. It also seemed painful because there was so much pressure behind it. And the noise… ![]()
@S&L, BunNoob: Thanks ^_^ Dutch humor is crude and a bit over the top at times, but we use it a lot in our daily speech. Work hard, and take a swing at anything which is good and holy as often as you can
We’re a nation of practical jokers, which sometimes backfires spectacularly. Historally odd nicknames were often given to people, which they used as some badge of honour. But the French wanted to make family names official when they ruled here in the early 1800’s. So now some actually have names like “Mr. and Ms. the Bent or the Crooked” but also “Mr. Jan Born-in-the-nude” and “Ms. Poopies”. Mature, isn’t it? ![]()
Here’s the history behind it: https://www.rnw.org/archive/mr-born…mall-poops
Yeah, I normally give them all a mix of herbs, but parsley is the only one that’s survived winter in my windowbox, so that’s why I have tons of that!
Anyway, she had some coriander (cilantro for you americans!) happily last night.
I think she’s 90% back to her usual self. She’s getting excited and eating hay when I top it up like usual, pooping, exploring and putting up a huge fight about her meds.
I would say she’s not quite eating her usual amount yet, but she doesn’t have to be coaxed to eat either, and all veg is being eaten.
Thanks everyone for your support!
And Ellie – I can’t believe someone called Ms Poopie wouldn’t change their name
I have one final question (hopefully!). She’s due her booster vaccination next weekend (20th, not this near one). Do you think it’s worth delaying a bit to give her a bit more time to recover?
I’m glad to hear she’s almost back to herself. I don’t think an extra week or so will be bad for her. If you vaccinate closely upon some health issue the body might not have the capacity to make the antibodies the vaccine is supposed to trigger the production of. In which case the vaccine does no good. But do ask your vet. They always want to make sure the animal is healthy before vaccination. If its the RVHD 2-vaccine Filavac, it’s an inactivated vaccine, so there’s no risk of her contracting the disease from it.
So sorry to hear about Luna, but glad to hear she’s much improved!
I would delay the vaccine, it really shouldn’t be given to a bun that’s just come out of illness.
They need to be at their healthiest for it to work best without any complications.
Wow, that’s great news! It always surprises me how quickly those little fuzzballs bounce back to health. They can get ill really quickly, but they’re also quick to recover (although it never feels fast enough for us). Kisses and noserubs for Luna
(About the names: people aren’t ashamed of it, most of us see it as a quirky bit of our national history and have a good laugh about it.)
Poor Luna, I’m glad she’s getting better! I agree, it would probably be best to wait with the vaccine.
Glad to hear the improvement. ![]()
I’m late seeing this, but really happy that Luna is so much better!!! And to know that there is yet another person that counts bunny poop ?. I actually put Luke’s in an antique candy dish so I can check them for foreign objects. Good thing I don’t have company often lol.
So glad to hear she is improving! Lots of good vibes for a full recovery. It really is relieving to see their personality come back and see the fight come back in their eyes. We want feisty buns!
I, personally, would delay the vaccination appointment for a while so she can have a solid couple of weeks to get back into the swing of things. Others might have a better answer since I don’t live in a country where rabbit vaccinations are required but you mentioned her hating the car so it might be better to push the appointment off for a little bit than add any undue stress right now.
Yay for Luna! So glad she’s bounced back ![]()
