Hi, I’m new to the forum. So happy to find a resource! Our rabbit, Maple, suddenly seemed listless yesterday and stopped eating. Same this morning, so I took her to vet. Vet gave her full check up and then said she may  have some bacterial stomach issue. Gave her pain meds for me to administer for several days, in addition to motility medicine and antibiotic. It’s late afternoon now and she’s still as listless as before. Vet did not seem overly concerned. I guess I wanted to ask and see if anyone else had a sick rabbit and it took at least a day for them to even begin to appear “normal” again. I’m so worried about her….

A day to full recovery is not always the case, but after a day, I think you’ll want to see if there are any signs of improvement, rather than the condition getting worse.

Has her appetite increased, has she been less reluctant to move, or are there any positive signs in general?

If she gets worse, I recommend calling your vet again. I don’t know of a vet who would look down on an owner for wanting treatment opinions if they perceive their pet getting worse.

I’m hoping that your bunny is either getting better, or you have gotten more advice from the vet and feel more comfortable. I was going to say that if she isn’t eating on her own by now and the vet was sure there is no blockage, you should probably syringe feed her. Rabbits really can’t go hours and hours without eating because their stomachs are designed to constantly be processing food. I won’t go into a whole tutorial on it right now, but I’d be glad to if you need help with that.

            I’m hoping all is well!

Bombur had a similar issue a while ago with Enterotoxemia. He was at the vet for a day and a half, and given the same meds as you. I also gave him Critical Care in the syringe as well. It took him at least 2-3 days on the motility, antibiotics and pain meds for him to start getting back to his usual self and eating again. This really is something you need to be monitoring constantly because if he refuses anything, he can go downhill quick. Make sure he’s drinking plenty and see if he’ll eat his favorite greens or some hay. If he’s not, syringe feed CC or pellet mash, and get him back to the vet. Stomach problems in a bun are one thing you don’t want to mess with.
