        Hi all,

Skinny (1.5 years old) only has joined the family for over 2 months. She pooped and sprayed a lot at our apartment but she was very attached to me because she used to jump on me when I sit on the couch watching TV and pooped and peed on me quite often. Being inexperienced we had tried to discipline her when she behavior poorly, we then learned that what she needed was a spay surgery to put this poor thing to calm down. Even that, we have never lost our bond until now…

Her surgery was exactly 1 week ago. Her recovery was very good. 1st day she grinded her mouth loudly because she was in extreme pain, but her appetite has slowly come back from the second day to the 5th day when her meds were fully consumed by her. She now eats, drinks and poops normally and her eyes shine again! We’ve kept her in the cage for the first whole week because we didn’t want her to roam too much which could break her stitches. Her wound looks quite good and she clicks her teeth when I pet her on the forehead inside the cage.

However, I start to let her roam today in our living room where she used to have so much fun. I haven’t spotted any accidents anywhere which I thought was a good sign. But she runs away from us which has been completely opposite to what she was… Am I losing bond with her? She does not jump on the couch to watch TV with me anymore. The surgery has changed her.

I’ve googled whole day but couldn’t find answers from people who are in the exact same situation like us. Any advice?

        -Jeff & Rita

She’s probably just grumpy because you took her to the vet, caused her pain then kept her in her hutch for a week. She doesn’t realise its for her own good. (I hope she had pain meds after the spay?)

The surgery hasn’t changed her, she just needs some time to get back to usual. Let her come to you and give her treats when she does, she’ll soon get back to her normal self.

Skinny is in hormonal turmoil right now, one week after her spay. Her body and brain are trying to adjust to the sudden stop in the production of sex hormones. This takes a while, anything from a couple of weeks to several months. This phase is known as a “post-spay craze”. Boys get post-neuter crazes, but they as a rule don’t last quite as long. It’s perfectly normal.

So just bear with her. She’s not “herself” yet. It’s great that she’s healed up so nicely. It takes 2 weeks for the surgical wounds to heal completely, so keeping her in her cage the first week was a good move. If she clicks her teeth when you pet her on the forehead she still loves you =) She’s just temporarily hormonally confused.

Thanks!  Good to hear that we haven’t done anything wrong since her horrible vet experience.

That’s good, good vets prescribe painkillers after a spay. Buns often find Metacam very yummy.

Sometimes a bad pain in animals can make them skittish or “mad” at you for awhile. I have had both sides of experiences. An injury making them bond with you more, and an injury severing ties for awhile. I say give her at least a few more weeks, their bodies can take awhile to adjust to the lack of hormones. Bonds can be rebuilt, but don’t rush them. If she’s avoiding you, try and use treats to make being around you more worth her time investment, but don’t push. Even small scares can turn a rabbit off a person for awhile.

Glad that I could help then.
