I cleaned the cage for my bunnies today, and I put more hay in the litterbox. I went to go check up on Cerise, and I saw him in the litterbox, eating the hay. I was glad at first but then I noticed he was picking some of the hay with his mouth and kinda.. tossing it out of the litterbox? He was still eating the hay, but, he was constantly throwing some out of the litterbox and I don’t know why  The hay is fresh, and he never had any issues with the brand before. His sister, Cocoa, isn’t being picky and it seems to be only him.

He also was biting the edges of the litterbox while he was in there. Any ideas on what’s wrong?

Most bunnies are picky about hay – even from one batch, some pieces are mysteriously better than others, and bunnies will pick the pieces they like first.

As long as he is still eating a good amount of hay then you don’t need to worry.

Biting things like litterboxes sounds like boredom. Does he have chew toys? Time outside his cage?

I also notice from your picture that they’re babies – you’ll need to separate them soon, if not now, so that they don’t accidentally breed, or start fighting when they reach puberty.

My boys waste a lot of hay too, unfortunately. But they eat a lot of it too. A lot of buns (including mine) really like Oxbow Orchard Grass.

Exhibit A: Ignoring 99% of the hay pile.

Exhibit B: Putting hay in mouth for the purpose of throwing it to the side to get a single, perfect strand in the center of the stack.

I think most bunnies don’t eat 100% of their hay, well at least that’s what my buns do. Peter and Daisy both like leather hats and always toss the stalks.
And chewing could be because he is not neutered?
