I was trimming Peach’s nails today and I noticed that one of her thumb nails was really short. I figure she got it caught on something and it broke off. She let me touch it and didn’t show signs of pain when I did, but it still worries me. I also haven’t seen any blood anywhere that she’s been, but it’s so short. Either it barely missed the quick or it actually did bleed and I somehow missed it. Anyways, the part that worries me is infection. She isn’t limping or anything like that, she’s acting the same, but all of the nails on her front paws are white, and now the thumb nail that caught broken off is dark. I don’t know what an infected nail looks like, if all of her nails were dark on her front paws (they’re dark on her back ones) then I wouldn’t be worried. Her paw isn’t red and seems ok so far, but then again, I have no clue when the nail broke off. If anyone can help that would me nice!! Hopefully it isn’t infected :/ also I realize that this is in the “habitat and toys” category but I don’t know how to change that, sorry!

Have you tried washing the nail? Maybe the darkness is dried blood. I’ve had bunnies where I accidently cut the quick and the nail bled. I always just dab the nail in cornstarch and it stops the bleeding. Never had any problems with infection afterwards.

I moved your this to the “Diet & Care” Forum.

I tried to clean it off but nothing was on it, so I don’t think it’s dried blood. Thanks for moving it to a different forum and thanks for your response!

It might be worth a vet visit, though I agree with LPT that the likelihood of infection is low. Luna broke/ripped off a nail when I first got her and it didn’t get infected.
