I used to get SO NERVOUS trimming my bunnies’ nails. And it definitely made it harder. The first few times I trimmed Jake’s nails, I was near tears I was so scared of hurting him! And the one time I cut his quick…forget about it! I felt SO GUILTY.
Then, I realized my nervousness was making the experience 500x worse. And the nearest place that trimmed bun nails was a long, stressful drive for bunny out of the way. So, I adopted a new attitude and new strategy and it worked so much better. I did the following:
1.) Picked the bun whose nails needed trimmed up like nothing was wrong
2.) Placed him/her on a soft fleece
3.) Petted him/her while I prepared stypic powder and moist q-tips “just in case”
4.) Placed a bright LED flashlight onto the buns nails to locate the quick
5.) Used the “press press clip” technique to help avoid the quick
6.) Held the bunny firmly and confidently to ensure s/he couldn’t flail and injure him/herself
7.) TREAT TIME!
I have purchased many different types of clippers and honestly, my favorite are the dog clippers from Dollar tree. I throw them out after a couple uses and get new ones to ensure they’re sharp and since they’re only $1, it’s no big deal. I also really like to file the buns’ nails down with a nail file after to make sure they won’t snag on anything.
Good luck and remember to be confident
