Porridge has had a major operation to rid the abscess in her jaw from a broken tooth. Now, where the stitches were from the operation, a tiny skin abscess has grown (size of a tiny pea and right on the surface of her skin).

My vet (who carried out the op) says its so small that we can just start to express the abscess (like a big spot), and I will have to keep expressing it and then using antiseptic to keep the infection away (possibly with some antibiotics).

Has anybody had any experience of dealing with very small abscess’s in this way/know whether it is successful?

The abscess in her jaw had to be an operation – she had numerous antibiotics (oral and injection) so I’m worried this won’t be strong enough to deal with it and it might get bigger! My vet was very thorough with her jaw abscess but that was a lot more complicated.

        Any advice would be useful

        Thanks!

I’m not sure how you would express it. Abscesses tend to be very hard in rabbits. They don’t really “pop” like a pimple would.

Hmm, yeah my vet said that abscesses in rabbits are filled with very very thick pus, which is hard to drain out, unlike other animals, so I don’t know…

The usual procedure is for the vet to physically clean it out, and sometimes pack it with something, and then for you to do antibiotic injections at home…
