hi all, so i haven’t been on in forever, but a little update on ollie (my 3 year old netherland dwarf)

i had noticed some wetness on one side of his mouth for about the past week and a half, so yesterday we got him into the vet to get it checked out. as i suspected, because of his breed, he seems to have a little bit of misalignment with his molars, no abscesses (i’m very happy about that) but obviously something needed to be done, so this morning we brought him in to the vet, and we should be able to pick him up this afternoon assuming everything goes as planned.  please keep him in your thoughts today as he hasn’t been under anesthesia since his neuter (which was before we adopted him). if anyone has experience with having this done please let me know some thoughts, i know this is not an uncommon procedure – especially for nethies. anyway just wanted to give a little update on him!!! please send some good vibes for his recovery, and hopefully it will be months before we’ll most likely have to do this again!

Sending you good vibes! It’s great that you brought him in and had the grinding done. It’s good to note what his behaviors/symptoms were like, because many times a rabbit will show the same symptoms each time it feels teeth discomfort.

Wick is only 1 years old and he’s had five grindings already (runt, misaligned jaw, underbite, and only chews on hay). He is younger, but based on my experience your rabbit should be up and running again within the day or a couple days. If not, you may need to re-visit the vet. You’ll want to make sure he’s eating, peeing, and pooping as normal, and his posturing is relaxed, rather than hunched and uncomfortable. If you perceive pain from your rabbit, pain medication following a grinding is not uncommon, since during the procedure, the rabbit’s jaw is open very wide for a long time, so soreness is inevitable.

Moose has had 2 molar extraction procedures and has bounced right back afterward (with pain meds!). Be sure to stock up on his favorite veggies and some critical care in case he needs a little boost. I’m lucky in the Moose will lick CC off a plate, so try offering it that way before trying to syringe it.

A very tiny dwarf that I rescued from a bad situation and took to our shelter had a pretty intense dental procedure at 9 years old (molar root growing through the jaw and into the cheek), and he also recovered well. Started eating CC on his own right after, and was trying to eat pellets (but falling asleep in his pellet bowl…. poor baby).

            (((good teeth vibes for Ollie!)))
