I tried to cut Dasher’s nails today but after a lot of struggling I could only cut 3 on her front paws. I don’t know how to get her back feet. I can’t hold her. Last time I held her was a two years ago and she bit my face and I almost dropped her so I don’t even want to try. I tried wrapping a blanket around her but she keeps escaping. She is 7 pounds so she is a bit big and difficult to control. I also don’t want to lose her trust since she gets scared easily but so far she seems fine and still loves me. Dasher gets really scared when she goes to the vet to get her nails cut but last time she was really scared of me for a few hours after. I think it would be less stress if I could do it at home. Also how often should I cut her nails?

My vet told me that female rabbit’s nails grow quicker, since in the wild the females dig the burrows. I’ve definitely noticed that Luna’s grow quicker than my boys. I try to do hers once a month, but it does depend on the rabbit.

Is there anyone that can help you? I think its much easier to cut rabbit nails with two people. Normally I hold, and my boyfriend cuts. Luna in particular is very grumpy about it, but it’s over in 5 minutes instead of the over an hour round trip to the vets.

I would say try to once a month. I used to check Ophelia’s nails twice a month, but after only two weeks they really hadn’t grown that far from the quick and I didn’t want to accidentally nick it, so I’ve been waiting a month.

She used to be very easy at cutting her nails…. but I accidentally cut the quick one time and so she is very upset with me grabbing at her paws now. I brought her to the vet a few weeks ago and she absolutely freaked out. I told them that she was very high stress and that she doesn’t like strangers, so they suggested that we try it sitting on the floor at her level. Well, she got even more spooked because she jumped up on the counter and the techs screamed. Gee, thanks for that guys… She was absolutely terrified. So we will not be going to the vet anymore.

What I do now is drape a towel over her while she is on the floor, then scoop her up and position her on her back, cradled closely to my chest so that she cant twist and hurt herself. Then I pass her to mu husband to hold her (I don’t trust him to cut lol). I keep her face covered with the towel so that she can’t really see what’s going on. I know it’s not ideal, but there simply isn’t a better way because she’s too squirmy. You’ll get feet flicks for sure after, so make sure that you offer some peace-keeping snacks afterward so that she isn’t TOO mad at you

Thank you, I’ve also noticed that Dasher’s nails grow faster than my other rabbit. I can ask my family to help me. I’m just not sure how to hold her since she gets terrified and runs away if I try to grab her. She is also very strong so I don’t want her to hurt hurself.

You could try putting some pellets or lettuce on the floor before you drape the towel. I find that it sort of distracts Ophelia a little. She’s very easy to grab though because she’s so small, she’s probably about 3lbs!

Thank you I will try that.

You also need to make sure you’re holding firmly once you’ve picked her up. Try and hold her over a table or something so that if she does get out she’s not falling from full height.

Make sure you have one hand securely under her bum and back feet, then the other arm holding her close to your body, with her front paws resting on the back feet arm. Does that make sense?

Then the person helping you should be able to get to the paws, one by one.
