        Howy all,

So my rabbit lives on mostly carpet/rug material and after a few days his hay gets everywhere. My conventional vacuum almost always clogs when I try to clean it up, which makes the job take twice as long as it should. I have to take the hose out, run a piece of wire through it to bust up the hay ball, and finish the job.

How do you clean up hay around the house when a simple broom isn’t an option?

I just pick it up or use a tape donut. You can cut down on hay scraps considerably if you only provide hay in high walled boxes. Wick’s hay is in his high wall litter boxes so he rarely tracks it out unless he’s throwing it out of the box because he doesn’t want that hay strand.

I’d love an answer to this. My husband would rehome me if I destroyed his Dyson beyond repair… and I’ve gotten close due to hay

The lint rollers I have are always rubbish and I find the hay is to big/thick for it to get adaquetly stuck on the lint.

Litter box walls are pretty high already, I think he pushes it out on purpose. Also, some of it comes from hay stuffed in his treat ball that he rolls around his pen. I would hate to take his treat ball away, he loves chasing it around.

Also not looking to spend a fortune on lint rolling the carpet every three days. I don’t mind a larger upfront investment if necessary if it means I can quickly and easily clean in the long term without a lot of waste.

Not sure that lint rolling would cost a fortune. You could even fashion your own with duct tape and a paint roller! Or buy a pet specific hoover. They’re more powerful.

I tend to sweep as much as I can, then vacuum the small bits, but I do have mostly wooden floors. I think you need a solution to keep the hay mainly in his pen! What kind of flooring does he have in his pen?

I’ve now added a little step to the door of my bunnies’ pen, so they have to take a little hop which stops the hay getting dragged around the room.

A damp sponge works really well on gathering up fur from the rug, because my vacuum doesn’t seem to pick it up from our rug at all. Not sure if that’s the rug or the vacuum’s problem though.

I’m going to keep track of this topic, since hay scattered around the buns’ condo is a major ongoing headache for me. Even the carpet sweeper I bought last month isn’t really conclusively solving the issue, so I think I’m going to have to break out the full-size vacuum cleaner. I’ve read that it bothers the bunnies less if you start the vacuum as far away from them as you can, and keep your body between them and the source of the noise, so I’m going to try that.

I rake up the as many of the big pieces as I can by hand, and then use the hose part of the vacuum for the rest. I find if I add an extra tube attachment to the end of the hose it clogs less and has stronger suction, but I usually end up having to unclog it once or twice.

The hose on my vacuum disconnects at the both ends, so it’s pretty easy to unclog, maybe investigate yours to see if that’s also the case.

                          That’s a good idea!!

Circling back on this – I found a post somewhere that recommended the old fashioned Fuller carpet brush. BOught one on amazon. It’s decent on the hay but not amazing – still prefer it over the vacuum tho because it is so much easier to maneuver and doesn’t have a cord or make noise. Its GREAT on the pellets!!! If you want to pellet clean daily but not vacuum daily, I HIGHLY recommend this: https://www.amazon.com/Fuller-Brush-Co-Electrostatic-Carpet-Sweeper/dp/B0006B0RP6
