(Apologies if this post is in the wrong section, I’m quite new to using forums!)

My rabbit Peanut is usually a very loving rabbit, but as of recently, I’ve noticed some strange behavioral changes over the past week. Typically he has no problems with hopping onto my lap and licking my hands, and comes when he is called and listens very well. Lately however, he hasn’t been listening to me and only comes for food. There hasn’t been any changes in his appetite, and appears to be just as energetic as he usually is. However he has recently caught mites and I’ve already taken him to the vet to get a shot, so I was thinking maybe that has caused his behavioral issues. Should I be worried about his sudden change in behavior?

Fur mites can be uncomfortable for the rabbit, and the bun can be less interested in social interaction because of that. But the shot against mites doesn’t take a long time to act. How long ago did he get the shot? Can you see if his skin is irritated and red? Is he scratching himself a lot?

He got the shot about 3 days go. There is no sign of red skin however it is slightly flaking and he still scratches. The vet told me that they would treat for mites as it is more common than ringworms and other infections, and we’re going for a second round of shots in about a week.

Hopefully the shot will help with his behavior within a week. He’s probably still itchy and uncomfortable and doesn’t feel like socializing. You can help him by combing/brushing him so you get the flakes out. Many buns appreciate that. Do it in the bathroom so you can clean properly after.

It’s great that you’re doing another round of shots, because that will kill off the mites that have hatched after the first shot. Some buns even need 3 rounds of treatment. My Bam needed 2 rounds, and after that he’s been mite-free.
