Hello everyone! I have my first ever bunny, Shiro, and he is almost 7 months old. He has been pretty healthy, but as of late he has been drinking a lot of water(causing more urination) and it is concerning me. He used to drink a bowl a day, but now he drinks two and a half. Could it possibly be the type of hay he is consuming? Is that possible? He does eat quite a lot of it. When he started to get older, I slowly introduced him to both timothy and orchard grass hay. He also eats veggies and a little bit of pellets.

I really do believe that the thirst started when he was fully on timothy and orchard grass hay, but could there be other things causing the thirst? I really don’t want anything to happen to my bun.

Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Higher hay consumption can certainly drive up their water intake. What volume of water would you say the 2 and a half bowls make?

I’m not sure of the exact volume of the bowl, but for reference, it is a bowl that can be attached to the side if a cage (coop cup). It isn’t too large, but good for a rabbit.

My own two buns get a large bowl of water, holding up to 4 cups, refreshed twice daily at the same time their hay is replenished. The amount they drink varies – sometimes a lot, sometimes not so much. For at least the past month and a half I’ve also been routinely wetting down their greens before serving it to them, since rabbits get a lot of their water from leafy green vegetables to start with.

Any potential for teeth problems? Water could be lubricating an irritation.

I actually just started to wet his greens before I give it to him. I would like to see if that affects his water consumption. And no, I don’t believe he has any teeth problems or anything like that.

It could also be something like a kidney infection or a UTI, if his water intake has suddenly increased. It could be worth taking him to the vet to rule out things such as teeth or urinary issues, if this is a new development. If those are all normal, then perhaps he is just a thirsty bunny!

My two drink two regular bunny bowls of water in 24 hours, so roughly a bowl each.

Hmm. Usually once they start getting wet greens, they drink a little less from a bowl or bottle. I would probably go to a vet to rule out a uti as Sirius&Luna said.
