Finding fresh veggies can be hit or miss in my area, so I am considering growing a few of my bun’s favorites at home.  I would prefer to do it indoors, and was wondering if anyone has had experience with this, and how you’ve gone about it.  I’m thinking of trying to grow carrots (for the tops), dandelions, green leaf lettuce and romaine.  I might give kale a try too.  I’ve been looking on Amazon at what is available for growing indoor veggies, and now I’m thoroughly confused.

Basil and mint are pretty gardener friendly indoors!

Yes, I’ve been growing herbs indoors, and it’s super easy! I haven’t tried anything harder than that yet. I just used a regular window box, but have it inside

The biggest concern might be the lighting. If you don’t have sunny enough windows, the plants might not thrive. I tried this and then had to move my plants outside because they were all dying. Most herbs and veggies need more light than common houseplants. If you have lots of sun or artificial light, this may not be a problem, but know that being able to keep, say, a philodendron or African violet happy doesn’t mean kale or lettuce will be happy in the same spot (personal experience, lol)

              Two more ideas:
-if you put the top bit of a carrot you have eaten in the ground, it will often sprout new leaves, quicker than growing from seed. It’s easy and my rabbit loves this.
-if you buy organic soil from a garden center or something, and bring it inside, you might want to do something to kill pests first. I learned this the hard way and my apartment was infested with fungus gnats for a while. Freezing or baking the soil first will help, although it’s a pain.

I agree with OTB, this time of year really isn’t the best for growing stuff indoors if you’re in the more northern part of the Northern hemisphere. Days are short and the daylight we get isn’t very strong. I start growing plants in February every year, but the best growth period light-wise doesn’t really begin until March.

I have just sown grass in an old litterbox though.

Thanks for the advice everybody! I am looking at buying one of those little indoor gardens on Amazon … the kind with the grow lights. I hope I have success because I don’t exactly have a green thumb!
