› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Lump in ear and nose!!!!
Oh my oh my oh my. Panic mode here. A couple of hours ago I noticed fluffykins has a small (maybe 3ish mm diameter) hard lump on the very tip of one ear. He also has the same thing right bang in the middle of his nose.
It’s under his fur, no wetness or discharge within it and I can’t really see it but feel it. The one on his nose is noticeable if you look at him from above him, you can tell his nose isn’t the usual flat shape.
Im not sure if they are painful, I’ve been lightly rubbing them between my fingers to figure out what the hell they are and once fluffykins did a sort of jump as I was feeling the ear lump. However I’ve rubbed it before and since, and no more indications of pain when I feel them.
Any ideas at all of what these are?! They were definitely not there yesterday. He’s eating and drinking and pooping fine (maybe poops are a bit smaller then usual today) but he’s been sleeper the last week or so, so eating less hay so poops have been smaller then back to normal quite a bit this past week.
Like I said he seems sleepier this past week but I figured he’s getting into a new sleep / awake routine so havnt thought anything of it. When he’s awake he’s alert and happy and eating etc. No other behavioural changes at all. Even the sleep – it could just be in my head that he’s sleeping more…
Please help! He’s back at the vets for vaccs in a weeks time fyi.
Buns sometimes get bumps on their ears. Bam has them. I’ve read about other buns here that get them. They’re not painful. I haven’t come across any on his face. I don’t know what they are but if I were to guess I’d say some type of harmless warts. They’re flatish (although elevated or they’d not be bumps, of course) and a few millimeters across.
My bridge dog sometimes got bumps on her nose. Vet thought it might be an allergy of some type and suggested I give her ceterizine (antihistamine). They went down after a day – couple of days.
Common places for papillomas are on the ears and face. If they are small, keratinized warts then they are probably papillomas.
Whaaaaat, warts?! Wow ok first I’ve heard of that. So essentially harmless? Is it normal they just pop up literally within a day? Are they meant to be painful at all?
My rabbit, Nelli, had a few bumps on her ears, just as you describe. Never gave her any issues and the vet never commented on them. I know the fear when you find something weird on your beloved bunny- and of course it’s ALWAYS when the vet is closed! Sounds like it’s not a big deal though. Obviously anything that pops up is something to keep an eye on and ask the vet about, but try not to worry because it doesn’t sound as if there’s anything to worry about ☺.
For the most part, they are harmless. And, as far as I know, they aren’t painful. At least not the ones on the face and ears. They can go away on their own or they can hang around for a long time. You may consider having them removed if they become large and bothersome. There is a very small chance of them becoming malignant. So, if that were to happen, you’d want the offending one removed (obviously).
So now theres another one on the other ear
It wasn’t here this morning so it’s just popped up in the last couple of hours. This one isn’t on the ear tip, it’s along the edge.
It seems like this one is / was also fluid filled; I didn’t see any fluid but it feels like it’s popped and hardened over. Looking closer at the bump on the nose, it also feels a little flatter and more rough – did that one “pop” too??
I think it can wait until your vet opens tomorrow, if Fluffykins still eating, drinking and pooping. But you seem really worried, so the best thing is to have your vet check it out. If it’s an allergy, there are antihistamines that are bunny safe. It is warts, your vet will probably tell you to keep an eye, because if they grow they might need to be removed.
He’s fully eating, drinking, pooping and peeing all normally. The only difference is he’s *very* tired. I can rouse him, I can annoy him to the extent he’ll hop away from me, I can get him to get up and run to me for treats and veg.. all of that but during his active times (right now) he’d prefer to have his meal then settle for a nap again.
He’s in his usual flop position when he rests. It’s almost like he’s not bothered (rather then he medically can’t). I’d think he was bored, if I didn’t notice the million toys and things around him! Normally during his active times he runs. Runs like the wind, around and around, binkying till he’s heart content.
None of that today :'(
He’s doing all the vitals (eating, drinking, pooping and peeing) but he’s not having any fun.
What is this?!
Since my previous message, TWO more spots have popped up on his ears and I’m presuming burst. They must be bursting as soon as they pop up because I’m camped out here in his run so as to not miss any new developments.
Edit: Just to clarify he comes running for the food and treats but only has a couple bites before resting again. It’s only because I’m sitting here annoying him and hand feeding him and physically moving him to the water and hay etc, hed getting his full meals. What worries me is I think if I left him to it, he might not be bothering to eat at all? That’s what’s worrying me about all this.
I’ve been looking at rabbit wart pictures online and I really don’t think this is it. For one, these spots are only about 3mm across. They are on his ears and one on the nose. They are also bursting as they pop up which leaves them feeling hard and the fur matted down. Again it’s on a miniscule diameter, the mat fur.
On one spot, there’s red matted fur so assuming the was a bit of blood in that spot. The other spots have something see through matting down the fur.
Any ideas at all what these could be?
Have you got any critical care at home that you can use til you get to a vet tomorrow? If so, I would do that.
Could the bumps be an allergic reaction to something?
I don’t have any CC but do I really need it? He’s eating all his veg, hay and pellets and taking treats. Eating slower then normal and I am giving him a nudge by hand feeding but he is willingly eating.
Do you think this might be an allergic reaction to something? I’ve never experienced anything like this so tbh I’ve no idea! I’m just stumped that the spots are popping up within a day (So we’ve had 4 pop up today) and bursting, and the fact they are so small. I can’t find anything on it online. If it wasn’t for his lethargy I wouldn’t think anything off them.

Probably not but I thought it might be good to feed him once or twice during the night so he’s got something to keep him going as you were worried he wouldn’t eat on his own. But if he’s willingly eating on his own, I’d just check on him during the night to see if his hay has gone down ![]()
I’ve no idea tbh but it’s the only thing I could think of! Is there anything new in the house that could be triggering?
Can you post a picture? I have heard reports of rabbit “acne”, although it isn’t something that is heavily discussed.
Another (scarier) thought… do you have myxomatosis where you live? I saw you mentioned vaccinations. That isn’t something we deal with in the US. I only bring it up because you said he’s acting lethargic. Otherwise, nothing else about this really fits… so I’m highly doubting it.
I do have myxo around here LB and I was wondering if these spots might be some sort of delayed aftereffects of the first set of vaccines I got but… I don’t know!
I’ve got a vet app for tomorrow so please everyone fingers crossed for then. I’m so scared it’s something serious… Oh gosh. I feel like I can’t handle any illness or sickness again, someone please give me a firm slap to get it together!
My Bam got 2 sores in each ear a week after his first myxo and RVHD-shot. That was years ago, so it wasn’t the same vaccine that’s currently used (Nobivac). But the vet deemed it was probably a reaction to the vaccines. His sores popped up within a very short time, I remember it because it was so weird. He also got a sore on one lower eyelid, I forget which side. The sores on the ears were round and like 6-7 mm in diameter. I don’t know if they were “bumps” to begin with. Anyway, they looked superficial but still needed 3 weeks to heal. The sore on the eyelid healed a lot quicker. I rinsed with saline eye wash and used an antibiotic cream on them twice a day. He didn’t seem bothered by the sores.
Thank you bam, it’s weird but id love for them to be related to the vaccine! Then I’d feel like it’s not really an internal (big) problem?! Maybe I mean inherent rather then internal..
Tomorrow cannot come fast enough. These do look superficial, and fluffykins is only a tiny little thing so maybe the smaller size is just because he’s smaller overall. They have all “burst” this morning and no new ones to report. Now we just need to stay this way until tomorrow!
Fingers crossed there won’t be any more bumps!
Bam had the same vaccines again a year after that first time, but they were given a few weeks apart that time, just as a safety measure. Then the Nobivac double vaccine was launched and now there are the RVHD2-vaccines as well. But Bam has never had another reaction to any vaccines after that first time.
If it is myxo-related, I do hope it’s a reaction to the vaccine! It’s reassuring knowing that it’s a possibility.
Any update Fluffy?
How long ago were his first set of vaccs?
It may be that he has contracted the nodular form of myxomatosis. This is where they’ll just get lumps that may scab and fall off. It runs it’s course and self-resolves.
Fingers crossed there hasn’t been a progression in his symptoms. {{{Fluffy!}}}
Sorry for the late reply. Had a (human) kid emergency yesterday so missed my vet app. Thankfully I was able to go in this morning.
The spots or skin lesions were getting better and fluffykins was even getting more energy and starting to run around. There were no new spots. However at the vets today, we noticed a pin prick sized spot coming up on his lip!
The vet took samples from the spots and what’s more worrying is they found a lump / abcess on his shoulder. Took samples from that too. Hopefully we’ll hear back from the lab soon.
I’ve been told to give him 0.2 (I think) of baytril. I asked about a probiotic to go with the antibiotic but the vet said because he’s generally so healthy he might not need it. But if he does I can go and pick it up.
Sorry if this isn’t quite making sense, I’m in a bit of a daze. Worst case scenario is myxo but vet said it’s highly unlikely. He thinks hopefully it’s just infections that will clear with the antibiotics.
I’m so worried. Scared. Feel like crying but feel all emotionally clogged up too. I can’t deal with more illness after losing a parent to a terminal illness only a few short months ago. I just can’t.
Edit; I forgot to mention the vet picked all of the scabs off with his finger. They are all ok looking except one scab on his ear that I last saw as a 5mm scab… is now a 13mm sized bloody gash. It’s an open wound! The vet had put sudo cream on it. It’s horrendous to look at.. I don’t know what to do about it. He said I can continue to put sudo crem or plain Vaseline if it’s still bloody.
If you’re unsure about the Baytril dosage, definitely call your vet! Great job inquiring about the probiotic as well. It’s good to know your vet is willing to provide if needed.
Vibes!

Ok baytril is 0.2mls for sure. I’ve also just been prescribed 1ml of fibreplex three times a day as he started getting mushy stools.
Does this all sound about right?
I have no idea about the dosage or the fibreplex but wanted to wish Fluffy the best, fingers crossed it’s just a silly infection and he has a speedy recovery xxx
Even if it is myxo, vaccinated rabbits get it in a milder form. Not even all unvaccinated rabbits necessarily die from myxo these days, if they’re otherwise strong and get good supportive care. Wild rabbits with myxo often starve to death or run out into traffic and get run over. House rabbits have much better chances at survival. Are there any sores around his genitals? That’s typical of myxo.
Baytril will help with keeping the wounds clear of infection in any case, so it’s good he’s getting that. Fibreplex is good too.
Wabbitwiki gives the Baytril dosage 5-20 mg per kilo body weight by mouth, once per 12-24 hours. You can look it up here, look under E for enrofloxacine:

Thanks for that Sarah and bam both very helpful. WOW these problems literally pop up out of nowhere!!! A few days ago the world was perfect.
Bam, really helps to hear this balanced perspective of myxo, thank you, myxo is like the C word in the rabbit world.
I guess the other awesome thing is if it was myxo… I’m certain it’s a very mild form as he lit has no other problems other then the sores, his privates are so far, fine. So the good thing would be once he recovered, I read he’d have immunity for life. ![]()
Results are back!!!
So fluffykins has NO infections at all. The lump on the shoulder was a swollen lymph node. The sores on the face and ears are (the vet said) an allergic reaction to something. First he said it’s most likely a reaction to the vaccine but then he said it isn’t likely due to this popping up a full week after the vaccine. But then he said it can’t be anything in his environment either as there is nothing new.
He also said wait a month of so before going back in for the RVHD2.. and they will give anti histamines alongside the vaccine.. which doesn’t make sense to me as he was quite adamant it can’t be a reaction to the vaccine as it was a week later it came up.
I feel like he doesn’t want to “admit” it’s vaccine related but is implying it (by saying it cant be anything else). This is annoying as I just want an honest answer! It’s not like I’d sue if it was vaccine related(!!!)
I need to know what he’s allergic to so I can stop this from happening again.
I am so apprehensive about ever getting him vaccinated again. But then logically – I know how real myxo and rvhd are. Such a difficult place to be in.
I’m also ecstatic to report fluffykins was *a lot* more playful this morning! We’re still not back to our usual self, but I can see this might be the start of getting there. YAY.
I’ve also been told to continue the baytril even though he absolutely hasn’t got any infections. I know it’s important to finish the course once you start – but isn’t this a massive misuse of the antibiotic? I will follow his advice but my gut is feeling much apprehension… and I know from experience to really pay attention to my gut..
Goodness, Fluffykins, I’m so relieved to read this
My Bam’s reaction also occurred one week after the vaccination. I think vets really are wary people could try to use them as a reference in a complaint or even a law suit.
I hope it is a reaction to the vaccine, because my Bam only had the reaction once and he’s had lots of vaccinations since. That they tell you to wait a couple extra weeks before you get the RVHD2 and they want to give an antihistamine are just normal precautionary measures.
As for the antibiotics, I obviously can’t have an opinion on what to do. With regards to humans, there’s no hard scientific evidence that a course of abx must go on for a certain amount of time, I recently read. But I think your vet would’ve told you to stop the treatment if they thought it was superfluous. My dog stopped an antibiotic treatment this summer on her vet’s order, when no improvement was seen after a week. Vets are aware of antibiotic resistance these days, and their treatment protocols are pretty strict.
You could always ask if you could get a topical ointment instead and stop the systemic Baytril.
Thank you bam. So your post prompted me to call the vets back and ask again if they are sure there’s no infection and if so.. why continue with the baytril. The vet I saw had left but another vet there that looked at fluffykins notes said I *should* stop the antibiotic. He also said to continue to monitor him and if anything else untoward came up, to obviously go back.
I feel more comfortable stopping but now I’m wondering why the previous vet told me the opposite! The previous one is the more bunny savvy one (and up until now I’m very impressed with him). Ugh it sure is hard finding the perfect vet. He’s the third one I’ve had experience with so far.
Edit: don’t know if I’ve mentioned here but baytril really gets fluffykins off his food which I read is a normal side effect. But all the more frustrating I was continuing to give it when I really didn’t need to. Quite irresponsible of the first vet!
I’m glad he got the all clear to stop the Baytril since it causes him to lose his appetite. It is the most common side effect of Baytril, but not all buns experience it. I hope he’ll soon have his full appetite back =)
Sometimes vets will prescribe antibiotics “just in case”. So I suppose it isn’t an unheard of thing for the vet to do in a case like this. But if the antibiotic is causing a problem and there isn’t really an infection, then I don’t see a reason for using it.
As far as an antihistamine goes, could you give Fluffykins some Benedryl before the next vaccination?
