Ok guys, here it is. The thread you’ve all been waiting for.
I spoke to the breeder and our girl comes home on the 25th. I get to go and play with her this weekend though while she’s still recovering from her spay. Naming is a tricky business though and some suggestions would be great. I’m open to anything except really obvious names like “Smokey” because she’s grey. Although more abstract colour names are ok. She’s a Somali and her colour is called blue.
So here she is. These photos are not mine, they were taken by her breeder.
So far I have:
Iris (not too keen on but the first that popped into my head when I cuddled her the other day).
Jasiri (after the hyena character on the Lion Guard). The name means bold, and courageous. Jasiri is a kind, fun loving, and bold character. She’s also blue-ish grey.
Vitani (also a Lion King character from the second movie). It mainly works well because the breeder name is Vivace. So she’d be Vivace Vitani.
I’d like to have a bunch of names in mind so that when I visit on Saturday I can try some of them out, it’s always easier to know in person.
OMG OMG OMG I SOOOOOOOO EXCITED MAN !!!!!!!
I watched a nature doc last night and saw the most gorgeous mini mouse. An elephant shrew known as the SENGI.
OMG that nose !!
I thought then what a fab name SENGI would be.
Shes got a tint of pink, though cringey, I think Rosie is quite nice.
I also like Kenza or Kenzo.
Ill have a think at work for more abstract names….
Umbra.
The smoky veil between worlds. (since kittehs are supposed to be half in another world). Other than that, you’ll have to wait until I pour coffee on my brain.
Oh my goodness. Azerene, she’s precious! What a face. And those ears.
I like your name ideas already. Always good to have lots to choose from. I bet you’ll know when the time is right.
First thing that I thought of was Eirene, Greek goddess and personification of peace. (Also a character on the HBO series Rome). I’ve always heard it pronounced with three syllables (EYE-reh-nee) but there could be other versions. The root of Irene.
For some reason she reminds me off a little gray fox so I thought of Vixey from “The Fox and the Hound” and Yobi from the Korean film “Yobi, the Five Tailed Fox.” Kitsune is also Japanese for fox. LIttle foxy kit-kat! :]
The markings under her eyes are gorgeous, too.
I thought of Isis when I saw her. But I guess that goddess’s beautiful name is not so popular these days…
I also like Nausicaa from a Japanese animated movie I love. And Totoro from another. And Arrietty from another. And Kaya from Willow. And Lilly from HP. And Arwen from LOTR.
(I don’t like fantasy that much…)
I know of 2 names which are not taken yet : Strainer & Drainer !!!! Lol.
PIGEON !!
Absolutley stunning, she definitely needs the name to match. I love Greek names. Hera is nice which means protectress and I like callista which means she that is most beautiful.
Hani : Somali girls name, kind of a short form of Hannah. Means “happy”
Leylo: Somali meaning “night” , not sure why but her colouring makes me think of evening
Yasmiin : Somali version of jasmine
Amaya: it’s a Japanese name meaning night rain
Taji : Japanese for silver and yellow
Lynx: obvious reasons
Blueprint : since the colouring
I like your thinking Vienna.
I feel like she definitely needs a pretty and unique name. She is gorgeous, congrats! Here are a few random things that popped to mind (other than the obvious Pigeon ) :
Catori (spirit)
Aera
Lillith
Yoonki
Petrichor (it is the smell right after rain. She could be Petri for short)
Kaliska (Coyote Chasing Deer)
Amrin : a royal quiet girl ; blue sky
Jaylin : blue coloured jay bird
Livie: colour blue
Okeley : blue sapphire
Kelsie : fearless
Amerie: brave
Brylie : brave
Emersyn : brave and fearless
Kaysie : watchful and brave
Or Kasey spelling means vigorous
I think she looks like a Emersyn … for short could be emery or Emmy
Not that this helps, but when I saw that my kitten (Now cat) had two big matching gray spots on each side of her, we named her Sabala, which is supposed to be ancient Assyrian for “Spotted One”. But we just call her Dotty.
Awww, how exciting!
Some great name suggestions already! I have a couple but I’ll come back to the thread when I can. I just wanted to say I like Jasiri, Az. And last 4 letters backwards spells Iris.
OMG! Look at that face! Squeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Well, of course she looks like a pigeon.
Hmm… what about Merida?
Oh goodness, the amount of name suggestions is overwhelming, lol Thank you so much everyone, I can’t possibly respond to each individual name right now, but I’ll try to compile a sort of shortlist later in the week and post it here
Q8, I had also though of Isis, but I had the same reservations about it as you did, haha.
@pinknfwuffy, Somalis are known as the fox cats, so it’s not surprising she reminded you of one.
@Jersey, nice pick up on the reverse spelling of Jasiri for Iris. Clever
She does have the reverse colouring of a Crested Pigeon: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/05/Crested_Pigeon.jpg
Well, Pigeon it is then!
I didn’t know they are known as fox cats
– the name Liska means fox
– tauber means pigeon hahahha
-Aryeh means young lion
-kesari means a lion
-shetani was originally going to be Vitanis name on lion king
You’ve gotten so many beautiful name-suggestions already, so I will only suggest the usual GoT names that I love: Danaerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, Arya Stark and Ygritte. All three really fierce female characters.
She’s so beautiful!
My great grandmother had a cat like that, her cat had a very old fashioned name, not sure if you would like the name with it being an old name ‘Tibby’
Great, now I want a Somali. Thanks Azerane…
I’m with pinknfwuffy and vote for Vixey. One of my name ideas for your tawny boy was in fact Tod from The Fox and the Hound because of his foxy looks, so that will be purrfect! Jasiri and Vitani are beautiful, too.
She’s gorgeous!
I like the name Umbra that Bladesmith pointed out.

You named 2 of my favorite Studio Ghibli films! Kiki would work as well. When my daughter was little, we must have watched that movie a thousand times, easily.
Although its a classic cat name, she does look like a regal SHEBA
Gibli movies are on almost daily in our house.
Turn to my adopted language… BELLE ??
Just coming back to this!
Some people names I thought of right away, after seeing her pic:
Lilah or Lila (she reminded me of my neice for some reason – tho she has a different spelling)
Erin
Kahliah
Aasha or Aisha
Naomi (I played around with that one in Google translate and Nao mii in Swahili is “with me”)
More Swahili (Lion King connection)
Kikati = Cat
Moyo = Heart
Baridi or Jalidi = frost
Makosa = misty
Mjuzi = seamist (pronounced Jozie?)
Isabella (name for blue with peachy beige colouration – dogs/horses/rabbits)
Tara (Taraxacum) ie. after dandelions
Bird name? Or another Fish name? Since you have a bird named after a fish..
Pigeon could work. Pidgey!
I didn’t have much luck with Somali words but BM has some good ones!
Kesari (that BM suggested) is pretty also and cool that it means Lion. Hindi I think..
I think Moxie just might get her way yet!
Hazel, you definitely need to add one to your family
Hubby gave me a weird look when I mentioned Pigeon was at the top of the forum vote. So I don’t think that one’s getting through, lol. It can be a nickname
She was spayed today, so I’m worried about that I sent a quick message to the breeder to make sure it all went well.
Kikati is a cute name I like Kesari too. It’s going to be an awfully long shortlist They remind me of another name idea, Kike (Key-kay, it was the name of one of the cheetahs from the old tv show Big Cat Diary, she used to use the jeep as a lookout post)
Kike Pigeon!
This is such a Catastrophe, hey wouldn’t it be great to call your cat ‘Catastrophe’ lol imagine the looks on people’s faces when you are calling your cat in for its food. “Come on Catastrophe, where are you Catastrophe?”
So here’s what I’m looking at, plus possibly some others I haven’t thought of yet. Can’t wait for cuddles tomorrow
Jasiri
Vitani
Umbra
Vixey
Pigeon
Catori
Kaliska
Kikati
Kesari
Kike (though probably not this one. Hubby informs me if pronounced differently it’s a strong racial slur, whoops!)
I like Umbra, for obvious reasons, lol. And as for Kike, I’d, respell it if you got that one. If you’re pronouncing it “Key Key”, then spell it Kiki, like form “Kiki’s delivery service”.
Bit of a K theme going on Az !!
I quite like Kenza or Kenzo
Of course Kyra , but Keera or Cookie, spelt posh if you like – Kooqui – LOL
Kamila !!
Karma !
Pigeon made the shortlist. Yes!
Lol
I am excited to see what she will be named
Nice shortlist i love vixey as I’m a fox and the hound fan , vixen means fox too. I love kesari and jasiri
blue jay
and congratulations
Oh my, yes… didn’t even think of that. o_O
So… Jasiri Pigeon? Hehehe!
Visited her today I feel like I’m stuck on Jasiri but I’m not sure it fits. She is bold but I just don’t know if the name sounds right if that makes sense, need more time with that one. She was all sorts of gorgeous today. As it turns out she wasn’t spayed on Thursday due to owner illness, but she’ll be spayed Monday and still be home on the scheduled date She does have a little hernia on her belly (I think where her umbilical cord was) but they said that’s a simple fix during her spay as it’s the location needed for that anyway. Spent a lot of time playing with a number of cats with a teaser, until everyone was worn out and then she flopped on my lap for an hour or more I also had many visits from other house cats, all wanting to see what I was about and get head scratches Of course I obliged.
I’m even more excited now since she seemed to still like me a lot today, lol. Her sister liked me too and I had trouble getting them off my lap when it was time to leave. Funnily enough, the two tawny kittens didn’t want anything to do with me. Must be fate
Oh Az that sounds heaven and I’m very excited for you !! Both cats shared my long lay in bed this morning and it is very peaceful, with purring by one’s ear!!!
How about Jazz-ahhhh ?
Or just Iri ?
You know it will come in time! Look how Strainer and Drainer turned out !!!
lol. Jazz-ahhh sounds like I’m calling her right as she’s causing some horrible catastrophe! lol
For the record, here’s the Jasiri namesake (cute song warning): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKjsfZVIBug
No, Az, thats Jazz-arrrggghhhhhhh !!!
Subtle difference
So is it a hard S like ja-“Siri”…or more of a Jaz-eerie? speshicially with a soft Ausaccent lilting with a lift question? at the end…..!?! lol
I approve of Jazz. that was the name of my K9 unit.
Jazz-arrgh Pigeon!
I don’t know why I was pronouncing it “Juh-sar-‘E'” in my head ?
Jasiri kind of makes me think of Al Jazeera, the news channel.
LOL Bam!
Well, I can safely say Pigeon does not remind me of any news channels.
Ooh! A whole new angle for bunny names now. News channels.
She didn’t suit kesari ?
Or some others :
Ari : Hebrew for lion
Savannah : for obvious reasons
Ali : feminine form in Arabic means lion
Arie : also Hebrew for lion
Safia: Muslim for lions share
Tiaret: African for lioness
Lew : Latin for lion
Leya : Indian for lion
