I am getting a four and a half month old bunny who is currently being fed second cut hay and alfalfa based pellets. I am wondering if it is worth feeding him a new brand of alfalfa pellets just to change him over to timothy pellets in a few months? I am planning on feeding him timothy hay no matter what, but can’t come to a conclusion on the pellets because I don’t want to change him over twice in such a short-ish amount of time. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I have a fourish month old bunny too! First time! Alfalfa pellets are better for him at this age because it gives him the nutrients and food needed to grow into a strong healthy bunny. That way he won’t be underweight! After he’s a year old then change to Timothy. Yes it is pretty pricey so I get what you’re saying. And you’re right to question changing in such a short period of time. It’s not good because it can destruct the bunny’s bowel habits and is generally not good for him. The best pellets for him would be Oxbow Essebtials Young Rabbit food so if you see those around at the pet stores consider getting those. The package has A LOT of pellets and lasts a while. I hope this helped! (My first time answering a question!!)

One more important detail, make sure you change his food carefully and slowly. Don’t give him new pellets all at once! Feed him one fourth new for a week with three fourths old, then one half new and one half old the next week, three fourths new and one fourth old next week and all new food the last week. The process is long but it’s safe!!
