I have my mini lop Louie for almost a year and from day 1 he has used his litter box very consistently. He was neutered at 4 months and we didn’t observe any change in behavior. As he has grown, we have bought him bigger and bigger litter boxes. In his current box, he comfortably fits in many directions and can completely lay down in there if he want to.
Recently, in about 20% of his peeing occasions, he gets into the litter box, slowly backs up until his tail is outside the box (back feet are still in) and pees. The liquid doesn’t go in the box at all and gets all over his toys and the bottom of his cage. Why is he doing this and how can we make him stop? We have tried moving the litter box toward the direction of where he wants to pee, that works for a day and then he flips around and does it on the other side.
He has plenty of room in the litter box. 80% of the time, he pees in the litter. He always poops in the litter. Does he need an even more gigantic box? Is he trying to mark something or enjoys the feeling of the edge of the box on his butt?
