Hello everybun! Random non-emergency question, but still important. Am I feeding Charlie enough? I was just doing a general pat-down to check for loose fur, possible injuries, and to determine if she needs a nail trim. Lately though, although she seems to be eating TWICE as much as usual, she isn’t gaining any weight! Her ribs are easily feel-able! Its not like shes not eating or anything tho, so I’m really perplexed! Should I be concerned? (If this helps, I feed her Hartz Rabbit Food, no added seeds, 1/2 cup a day.)

How old is your bun? If your bun is under 6 months that is a good amount to feed. A lot of people do unlimited pellets until around 6 months and begin decreasing down to 1/8 cup. Do you feed greens as well? Under 6 months, both my hollands were getting unlimited hay and pellets as well as 2 cups of greens a day. Do you know how much she weighs?

I’d also suggest you start weighing her. I weigh my Bam once a week in a bowl on kitchen scales. Write the weight down so you can keep track over time. If she’s very young she should be steadily gaining.

Similar question. How do you tell if your bunny is too fat? I have an 11 month old Mini Lop. He gets 1/8-1/4 cup of adult pellets, unlimited hay, and about 2 cups of greens per day. He is always hungry for dinner and chomps down his pellets within the first 15 minutes. He is over 8 lbs but his parents were 6.5. Is he to fat? How do you tell? He is so furry that I have a really hard time deciding if he is too fat or too skinny.

Is it normal for him to be hungry for his pellets? Should I increase his greens if he is continually hungry? How can I tell if he is too fat?

I read somewhere that a bunny should be sleek and solid, but that it’s ribs should be readily felt when light pressure is applied.

For the one who seems slim, have you tried oatmeal? A small tsp or two per day is not only a very exciting treat, but also sleeks up the coat and adds a nice little bit of fat. Ours are crazy about oats. Every night they will toss around their sealed oat box next to the cage and run back and forth until they get the treat. One of them is too fat and the other too thin so we put them in different places and give the thin one a little extra.
