  Anyone else have this problem of tiny bits of hay getting stuck into their fingers almost everyday??
  
  Then having to use a tweezer to pull it out. It sure is painful!
  
  I don’t think my hay is any dustier or coarser then most? The main hay I use currently is excell Timothy hay (with marigolds and something else), as well as oxbow alfalfa and oat hay.
  
  Whilst I’m here, because the excell hay (which is the best quality I’ve found so far after sampling everything from local let stores) does still have a lot of brown bits, anyone else in the UK have recommendations for buying great quality hay online? I normally get my excell hay from Amazon.

  I haven’t had that problem myself but I got poked (not to the point of the skin being broken) by a stiff/hard stalk of hay while refreshing the fodder this morning. The mixed hay I use has very long stalks which probably helps that way; I’ve observed that store-bought hay tends to be cut pretty small.

  I sometimes get hay sticking in my hands but not splintering as such. I’m in the UK too and I actually wasn’t that impressed with Burgess Excell. I was using Friendly Readigrass but recently tried out Burns Green Oat Hay and Oxbow Orchard and have switched to that now with Readigrass being just for in the litter trays (only because I’ve still got loads of it!) I order from thehayexperts or timeforpaws

  Oh yay I use that ready grass too Sarah. You’re right about the hay being cut small joea… I’m always disappointed at how short the bits are.
  
  I’ve only brought hay from 2 local let stores (pets at home being one) and even after getting the most expensive ones they have I’ve been left sorely disappointed. I keep reading hay is supposed to be green… I wouldn’t have ever dreamt that if I just looked at the pet shop stuff.
  
  The Burgess excell ones probably aren’t that great because there is a fair amount of dead looking brown bits (maybe half the bag in total?) and the pieces are cut small… It’s just compared to the let shop bags at least it’s somewhat green!
  
  Thanks for the names Sarah I’ll check both places out. By the way, if I give more then a big handful a day of the readygrass to fluffykins… he produces excess cecotropes (just like if I give too many fresh greens) so I can’t free feed it to him, though id love to because it’s lovely and green and he goes mad for it.

  Readigrass is quite a bit richer than traditional hay so that could explain the excess cecals. If you find a hay that he enjoys you could use the readigrass as a hay topper
  
  Ooh by the way, if you want to try Oxbow, they sell it on pets at home website (only online tho not in store) but you can get it delivered to store for free!

  As a bunny and previous horse Mom, yes I’ve gotten many hay splinters. Not fun!!
  
  Tonight was a first though. Was grabbing a handful of long strand Orchard hay and some got caught up around my fingers and got a hay “paper cut” between my two fingers. Ouch!!!
