        Hi.

My family has decided to redo our lawn and I want to choose a grass which would be suitable for my rabbits to eat and play on. Is there any specific type of grass I should avoid or is there any type of grass which you would recommend?

        Thanks.

Most grasses are safe, but I’d try to avoid rye grass (Lolium rigidum) because it can get infected by a fungus that produces a neurotoxin. I don’t know how real the risk is for rabbits, but horses can get sick from grazing on pastures with fungus-infected rye grass.

Oh goodness, do people actually use ryegrass for lawns anymore? That stuff needs SO much water.

What type of growing conditions are we talking about here? Fescue is more drought tolerant than bluegrass. Both are safe for bunny as long as they aren’t treated with chemicals. I believe most other grasses are OK too.

My only concern with allowing a bunny to graze outside is the possibility of wild animal contamination. Will you have an area quarantined off?
