Peanut has had a crusty eye 3 times in the last month. It looks like sleep dust (as I call it) and it goes away on its own within a few days. I try to wipe it for him but it’s stuck so unless I really scrape it, I’m not gunna be able to get it off. Peanut is okay with me petting his eye area but he’s not okay with me messing with it too much.

I’m wondering if Buttercup’s washing his face less? She used to really be quite thorough in cleaning his eyes for him. I don’t think they groom each other as much but it could be I’m just missing it as I’m not in the room with them at all times like I was before (the move) It’s a whute/clear ish crust on the inner corner so not in his actual eye and it doesn’t bother him but should I be concerned?

Is there any sign of nose discharge? Like humans, when there’s a stuffy nose, there’s an increase in eye crusties.

Nope, not that I can see. No sneezing or anything either.

Huh, I don’t know what can cause this type of discharge, but I think they can wipe their own eyes just fine normally. My rabbit is an only bun, and wipes her eyes as part of her grooming. Sorry if that’s not helpful at all, I just don’t think your other bunny’s change of behavior is the cause of what you see.

If they look like normal eye crusties, then it would suggest to me that something has changed. Perhaps Buttercup hasn’t been grooming as much, like you said. It is possible that the stress from the move has caused some behavior changes.

Other thoughts… maybe there is something in the new environment that is making him produce more eye stuff?

Thankfully the crust vanished yesterday early evening. I’m not sure how! A few hours later I saw Buttercup giving his eyes a thorough clean so hopefully that will continue.

What sort of environmental stuff could cause extra eye gunk? My mum has two dogs but they don’t come upstairs but I wonder if I’m tracking dog fur up there. Could that be it?

It’s a possibility. New kinds of irritants in the environment can lead to more eye crusties build up.
