My rabbit was neutured earlier today and since hasn’t eaten or drunk my water at all. I’m getting more and more worried, I mean he looks relaxed but I looks can be deceiving …….. I’ve tried both his pellets and also treats (dried apricots) … but he’s not interested either.

The surgery was done about 6 hours ago so I’m not too sure if timewise I should be worried or how much I should be concerned … when I gave him his food bowl earlier the first thing he did was try to move out the way which to me was a good thing it kinda funny if I’m honest but that was over 5 hours ago ….. now I just getting more more worried….. anybody here who could give us any sort of advice that might help?

Not drinking after a better is common, but he should try to nibble items. Try wet veggies to help his appetite and thirst. He will be sleepy due to the meds, but afterwards, he should try to eat a bit.

            Hi Kaz,

It’s really important for bunnies to start eating after their neuters, but its not uncommon for them to not want to. Did the vet give him painkillers?

Can you try hand feeding him veg and treats?

The best thing to do would be to call your vet for advice. Hopefully they can give you some critical care and you can syringe feed until he’s eating on his own. Make sure you talk to the vets before they close for the day though, you don’t want him to go the whole night without eating.

If they can’t, then you can soak some of his pellets in water, and try feeding him that mush. Do you have a large syringe you can feed him with?

              Cheers for the input.

The vet prescribed him 4 doses of Metacam and gave us a small bag of critical care.

He was just nibbling/eating a bit of fresh mint from my garden, so that’s great but he still hasn’t touched his water …. I’ll have a look to see if there are any treats around apart from dried apricots which he doesn’t seem to like anymore -it seems.

Stick with overly wet veggies until he drinks on his own. Wick didn’t drink for 2 days, but he still peed as usual from wet veggies. You can also syringe feed water if you’re worried.

Also, he may just not want to eat treats that require a lot of chewing right now. After a neuter, a rabbit will display off behaviors like not drinking to overcome it, so give him some time before tossing his treats.

He’s moving around the house, it’s not a big house but yeah it feels good ..

Anybody think this extra movement might result in him wanting to eat a little more than he is?

Movement is good, if he was feeling really bad he wouldn’t be moving at all!

Keep offering him the mint and things that he is eating, if he’s eating at all that’s really positive.
