        Hi everyone,

I have a really fussy bunny, who doesn’t like to be restrained at all so it makes it difficult to trim her nails.

Is there a way to do it where she’ll stay calm or should I just take her to the vet to get them done?

        Thanks,

        Jess

It depends on the rest of her behavior and what you feel comfortable with really!

If she’s lying or loafed on the floor, would she let you pick up a paw and trim a couple of nails like that? Lots of people just do it slowly over a couple of days, and mark on a piece of paper which nails they have done! I think some rabbits would find it more stressful to have the process dragged out.

Having a vet do it and you watching is a good idea if you’re nervous and haven’t done it before.

As mentioned, it’ll depend on your rabbit. I can’t hold Wick while doing it, because even though he’s small, I’m small, so I just don’t have the arm length to do it haha. I can’t put him on my lap either because, again, small, so it’s not an even surface he likes to lay on. Alternatively, I clip his nails when he’s lounged. This is something I had to discover. You can explore now without clipping the nails. See what positions your rabbit seems to tolerate best with you touching paws. Do this in small increments as to not stress your rabbit though. If you do pick up, don’t stand up, as most rabbits jump when their back paws are touched, so that’s a bad fall. Be on your knees or crouched.
