help?? i think im allergic to my rabbit

  hey guys, so I’ve been planning on getting a rabbit since late last year. I couldn’t get one last year because I was saving up for something big and wasn’t ready to purchase everything a bunny needed yet. A couple of months ago i was ready and i found a perfect place to get my rabbit from, but when i went to visit the rabbits, when i spent too much time around them, I started sneezing a lot and my nose was all irritated. I’ve been planning for this bunny for months and months and months, id do anything to not have to give it up. I’m wondering if anyone else here who’s ever had a rabbit allergy could tell me how they were able to rid of the allergy entirely? I’m just trying to find any way to be able to keep this rabbit so I’d really only like advice on how to rid of allergies not “oh well you’ll just have to get rid of it. I’ve fallen in love with this bunny so any help would be very much appreciated!! thank you !!

  First of all find out if it’s actually the bunny you are allergic to. It could be the hay…

  Yes as Fluffykins mentioned, it could actually be an allergy to hay and if So, you might not be allergic to all hay. I believe there’s a few members here that have allergies to Timothy but are okay with oat, orchard etc so rule that out first

  thank you both!! i considered that, I just didn’t know if it was possible because I was up close with one of the bunnies but the hay was in a very small section of the pen I was in with them and there wasn’t a ton of it so I didn’t know if it’d even be able to affect me. I am allergic to a lot of grasses and stuff when I was allergy tested I found that out. I’m really hoping it’s not the actual rabbit itself I guess u will need to go back to the allergist and find out soon. if it were to be the rabbit, is there anything I could do that would work well?

  If it is truly an allergy to the rabbit and not to the hay, there is no way to entirely rid yourself of the allergy. But some people control their allergies by taking a daily antihistamine tablet, running an electronic air cleaner in the house, making sure that the house and especially any area the rabbit is in is kept well vacuumed, and making sure that the rabbit is brushed daily (preferably by someone else).
  
  You can have allergy tests performed by a specialist, or you can try to determine the source of your allergies on your own, by handling timothy hay and other hay varieties, to see if that is the culprit.

  I’m actually allergic to Wick. When he’s shedding it’s terrible. There are things you can do to lessen it.
  
  When petting, fur may fly off so you can wear a face mask for especially shedful days. Don’t rub your face after handling your rabbit. Use a lint roller to remove fur from your environment.

  I’m allergic to timothy hay, but not to bunnies or other types of hay. Orchard and oat hay are perfectly fine, but timothy gives me a persistent dry cough and runny eyes. Allergy against timothy is very common. If you’re in Europe, almost all hay that’s called meadow hay has timothy in it, because meadow hay is a mix of many different grasses.
  
  If you truly are allergic to rabbits, it’s sadly not a very good idea to own a rabbit. To an extent you can control an allergy with antihistamines, but it’s not great for your health in the long run.

  thanks so much for all your help to all of you !! i actually was wondering if it was the hay, because ive been told by allergists that im allergic to many types of grasses and when I went on a hay ride at one point I was sneezing like crazy. plus, when I went to pet and visit some bunnies at another place where there wasn’t any hay in sight, (I don’t know why), I showed no reaction whatsoever. so today I opened up the sealed bag of Timothy Hay and stuck my nose up to it several times, and sure enough, my throat started itching, my nose did too and I’ve been sneezing. so I know I’m allergic to the hay, and if so I can simply switch to another type of hay, the thing is I just have to hope it’s JUST the hay. do you guys know how likely it is for people to be allergic to bunnies as compared to their hay?
