Sprocket loves to hang out under my couch…that is his little bunny spot. About an hour ago he got scared of me moving and then he knocked over a baby gate by accident in front of the TV as he jumped up so he then got scared of that and he full speed ran under the couch… I could see him hit his head and I knew it was not good.

So he hit his head and a huge chunk of fur is now missing. He isn’t bleeding and he seems okay. He took some apple, then had some parsley and even ate some hay and he just used the potty. He lets me gently touch it and stroke his head and I don’t feel a bump…yet…also I didn’t touch the skin just in case.

How worried should I be about this? Will the fur grow back at all?

          Oh, poor darling boy…
The fur will grow back, but I’d just be worried about anything going on under the skin. Keep a close eye on him, watching out for disorientation, imbalance, as well as any of the classic poorly bunny signs. ((((((Sprocket))))))

Agree with Q8, the fur will be fine, but keep a close eye on behavior.

My rabbits have hit their heads in various things- one of them used to get so excited for her food, she would charge at the plate as I was putting it down and I would feel and hear the impact as her head slammed into the edge of the heavy plate. Somehow, she never seemed any worse for the wear. I wonder if it is because their bodies are so light, the impact of them running their weight into something doesn’t hurt them as much as say, a human would be hurt after running their head into something…? I just don’t know. However, watching for behavior changes, uneven pupil size or loss of balance is a good idea. Sorry for all your stress!!!

He seems okay actually. I checked and nothing seems to be stuck in or on the skin. I checked when I had him on the dining table for his ear drops. He has done the run under the couch thing many times before and had no problems. But because I was sitting on the couch this time it may have been a tad lower in the carpet and the edge was uneven and the guy got caught on that uneven spot. I filed any uneven areas down now.
He is running around eating and everything. He even slept in bed with me last night. Usually he’ll just sleep under the couch.

just as I was ready to let go of the trauma of his previous stunt…now this happens….

to me this looks as a cut and not an eye infection. I looked at it closer and its only red in that area and not the rest of the eye.

I am FREAKING OUT I am the worst bunny parent ever!!! another injury…. awwww .

Can you guys let me know what you think? cut vs infection? Has anyone else’s bunny had something like this happen? or do I need to bubble wrap sprocket and the house to keep him harm free?

It looks like a skin irritation under his eye to me. I personally would send the pictures to your vet and ask for advice, just in case.

Dont worry too much about him hurting himself. Sometimes thats part of being a curious bun Bunny proof as much as possible, and if he is still getting hurt, he might need a large safe pen instead.

Here you can’t send pictures to vets. You have to go in for an appointment. We will be going to the vet at the end of the week anyways for his ear re check. This morning the redness is more isolated into a small single line. So I can now actually see the small scratch under his eye. The fur is also separated in a small very thin line which makes me lean toward as cut vs infection or irritation . I will of course keep an eye on it and him. He isn’t scratching it and there is no discharge and the rest of the eye isn’t red.

Oh rookie… what does the cheeky little bunny put you through!

Universal question of all parents when the “kids” are constantly looking like they just finished a battle with a crocodile… “am I just a rubbish parent?!”

The answer, happily, is a strong resounding NO! Kids just have a secret universal plan to drive their parents potty before they grow up and move out. And here, the word kids, surpasses any species boundaries.

So I have an idea of what might have scratched sprokets eye… I spent the evening yesterday sitting on my sofa with a pin in my hand…”operating” on my own finger. Trying to pull out the TINY piece of hay that had found it’s way just under the top layer of skin and hurt like HELL and was also turning into a nasty fluid filled lump…

HAY. A tiny piece of hay! Got into my finger. So hay is deadly. Deadly I say! I can totally imagine the evil hay scratching a poor bunny esp in that facial area.

He has been more intensely digging through his hay bowl when I mix in the pellets for him…he really is like a little crack addict when it comes to the pellets. And I started mixing in other hay to his alfalfa to start transitioning him off it so he has been picking though it all to select and eat out all the alfalfa. I guess that could be it.
It is so specifically just under he eye that I can’t see him hitting his eye anywhere else as that would have caused way more damage.
I covered all sharp edges that I could find under the couch and anywhere else that I could think of being the suspect.
                                Next step.. .bubble wrap…

                                  Silly bunny!

Atlas once managed to cut his eye, and I decided it must have been from him over-vigorously scratching with his back legs. His nails weren’t especially long, but he is very vigorous and I just couldn’t think of any other explanation. Perhaps check his nails haven’t got any sharp edges on that side?

Looks like a hay stalk scratch to me. Eye looks fine. Lower lid looks grazed.

Finally a win for me as a bunny mom… totally had a ninja mom moment last night.

Sprocket sleeps in my bed…he has his side and I have mine…last night mid sleep I somehow came aware of the fact that he was preparing for a bunny flop…usual tell tale signs of digging at spot first… but I’m sleeping and barely awake…but I look slightly up as sprocket is terrible and the flop…he always flops then flips over to the other side…well this time he flopped the wrong way and almost flipped off the bed…
Through a miracle I reach and lounge across the bed mid sleep to put my hand under his back as he is about to fall off the bed and turn him back into safety. Phew! Mom for the win! Yay!

Ps. Eye is all healed up now.
