        Hello fellow bunny lovers!

I know this is a topic that has been discussed on here previously but I could not find a recent conversation and was wondering if anything has changed.

So basically I have been doing research on what the best rabbit food is to feed to my baby bun and from previous posts and conversations I read on here it seems that Oxbow is a very popular go to. Is this still the case?

They sell the Oxbow Essentials Young and Adult rabbit food at a local store near me.

I should also mention my baby bun is currently 6.5 weeks and is a holland lop. He is currently on the food that I bought from the breeder which is called Masterfeed. They only sell in large bulk from what I have been told. So I’m thinking I should start the transition over to something better as I have never heard of this brand.

The ingredients for what he is on now are:

        Crude protein (min): 17%
        Crude fat (min): 3%
        Crude fiber (min): 15%
        Crude fiber (max): 17%
        Sodium (actual): 0.205%
        Calcium (actual): 1%
        Phosphorus (actual): 0.6%
        Vitamin A (min): 11,000 IU/kg
        Vitamin D3 (min): 2,000 IU/kg
        Vitamin E (min): 50 IU/kg

I asked if it was alfalfa based and she is pretty sure it is, although it does not say on the tag. I called the store and they also believe it is alfalfa based although I never heard the “for sure” answer… lol…

Also, my baby bun is currently eating Timothy Hay and the brand is Natural SunSations(I will switch him to the Oxbow brand once he is out-unless someone knows if this is not a good brand?). If his pellets are alfalfa based, can I keep him on the Timothy or should I switch to alfalfa hay?

From advice I already received on here, I know to switch him the adult food which is Timothy based once he is 7 months old. Again, thanks for that advice guys!

Oh also, from my previous post and what I had inquired about, it still seems my baby bun is having more than usual of the cecotropes but only in the morning. Throughout the day they are all normal. Someone had told me that because when I got him he was only on the pellets, his diet was too rich which would have caused an excess of this. Since he has only had hay since Sunday(so today is only his 5th day on it) is this still normal?

I would also like to add that other than that he seems to be doing great. He got some new toys yesterday and he was LOVING them and I saw his first binky’s! Made me really happy.

Anyway, thank you so much for the help again! Sorry for the long message yet again, don’t mean to be a pain! Just with what happened with my first baby it was a horrible first experience so I am being extra vigilant now! I want the best for my little guy and since he’s so young I want to make sure he gets the best and everything he needs.

It’s common for young buns to have excess cecals. Their gut flora is still immature. Hay is the best way to get them a good, sturdy gut microbiota, so if he’s eating hay now, it’s great.

In my opinion, the food he’s on now has too little fiber. You want 20% crude fiber at the minimum. Oxbow has 25 %.

I don’t know the brand of hay you’ve got, but Timothy hay is great for buns and if it smells good and he’s eating it, I think it’s fine.

Thank you so much for your reply bam! You’ve helped me again, thank you, you’re awesome.

Makes me feel better about the excess cecals. I didn’t know that even after all my research lol.

Good to know about the fiber. Ill make the transition over to the Oxbow then I believe. He does enjoy the hay so I will let him finish the bag before switching.

            Again, thank you!
